## Mometrix The respiratory rate and the heart rate will both be slightly increased. - Newborn reflexes and muscle tone are normal. - Oxygen may be administered. ### Complications #### Respiratory problems ##### Birth Asphyxia Symptoms of birth asphyxia are as follows: **Moderate** - Hypothermia as evidenced by low body temperature. - Hypoglycemia as glucose stores are used up trying to supply organs needed energy. - Pupils are constricted. - Signs of respiratory distress are evident. - May experience seizure activity at 12-24 hours of age. - Lethargy (floppy infant). - Bradycardia **Severe** - Note: This requires close monitoring in a NICU. - Pale color related to the inability of the heart to perfuse the body. - Cerebral edema related to apnea episodes and/or intracranial hemorrhage. - Resuscitation will vary according to the infant's condition, but warming the infant, stabilizing the glucose level, and providing oxygen or EMCO (in severe cases) may be indicated. ### Minimum Neonatal Resuscitation Equipment **Temperature** - Thermometer. - Warmed drying towels, warmed swaddling blankets. - Radiant warmer. - Phototherapy equipment. **Respiration** - Oxygen tank and hood, flowmeter, humidifier, heater, tubing, nasal prongs. - Bag and mask set-up (assorted sizes). - Laryngoscope with size 0 and 1 blades. - Endotracheal tubes, sizes 2.5 to 4. - Bulb syringe, suction catheters, sizes 6, 8, and 10 French, suction canister. - Cardiorespiratory monitor, oxygen analyzer. **Fluids** - IV needles and tubing, infusion pump, umbilical catheters (sizes 2.5 and 5 Fr). - Blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter. - Isotonic saline. - D10W. - Sodium bicarbonate - If transfusions are done here, blood drainage system, volume expander, and blood warmer. **Drugs** - Epinephrine.
