# Proceso de humanización y cultura When we say someone is more human, we mean that they treat others better. Symbolically, the word _human_ represents the conscious and deliberate quality that people have of being empathetic, supportive, affectionate, communicative, loving, social, rational and relational. However, in this section we will study the process of humanization from an anthropological point of view, that is, as a process of cultural assimilation through which the human being adapts to the environment in a determined way. Before explaining what humanization consists of and the influence of culture in this process, it is important to distinguish this concept from the term _hominization_. ## Hominization Hominization is the evolutionary process through which the characteristics of the human being as a species are acquired and consolidated, that is, those that make us different from other primates. Within this process, we can highlight the improvement of bipedalism (walking with the lower limbs), the development of the brain and the vocal tract (which allows speech), as well as the extension of the maturation period (childhood). ## Humanization Humanization, on the other hand, is a process of cultural evolution that has been building the human being since the first hominids. This transformation fundamentally affects relationships with the environment (development of techniques and instruments), relationships with other members of the species (cooperation, distribution of tasks, etc.) and communication (development of language). Therefore, we can say that hominization is a biological process, and humanization, an anthropological process through which culture arises and develops. The biological changes that led to our species (Homo sapiens sapiens) were accompanied by cultural changes that allowed them to adapt to the environment. ## Relationship between humanization and hominization There is a reciprocal relationship between the processes of hominization and humanization. The most evolved individuals (because they have a larger brain) had a greater capacity to develop culturally (systems of communication and organization, tools, etc.) and, therefore, they were more fit for survival. Likewise, some cultural changes also caused physical changes in individuals. ### Example The discovery of fire (cultural innovation) brought with it important changes in the human being, not only in his social life, but also in his own brain anatomy and, therefore, his mind. For example, the cooking of food favored digestion and the absorption of nutrients, having a positive impact on the nervous system. Moreover, fire facilitated the construction of tools and utensils, which boosted creativity. Similarly, around fire, social relationships between families were developed, which influenced communication and language development. ## How to humanize people? **Important aspects in the treatment of humanization:** 1. Know the person and their context, that is, empathize. 2. Focused attention on the person. 3. Quality and warmth in treatment. 4. Try to understand, active listening. 5. Accompany in delicate situations. 6. Offer security and trust to the user.
