Study Notes
The Endocrine System
- Uses chemical messages called hormones to regulate bodily functions.
- Hormones are released into capillaries and carried by blood to target cells.
Location of Major Endocrine Organs
- Pituitary gland
- Pineal gland
- Thyroid gland
- Parathyroid gland
- Adrenal gland
- Pancreas
- Gonads (Ovary and Testes)
Pituitary Gland
- Has two lobes: anterior lobe (anterior pituitary) and posterior lobe (posterior pituitary).
Thyroid Gland
- Consists of two lobes and a connecting isthmus.
- Located in the anterior triangle of the neck, slightly below the cricoid cartilage.
Parathyroid Glands
- Generally 4 glands embedded in the back of the thyroid gland.
Adrenal Glands
- Also called Suprarenal glands.
- Located on top of the kidneys.
- Two areas: medulla (inner region) and cortex (outer region).
Pancreas
- A mixed gland with both endocrine and exocrine functions.
- Exocrine function: digestive enzyme secretion (acini cells).
- Endocrine function: produces hormones through Islets of Langerhans (islets of the pancreas).
Thymus
- Located posterior to the sternum.
- Largest in infants and children.
Pineal Gland
- A small projection of the diencephalon.
- Part of the epithalamus.
This quiz covers the basics of the endocrine system, including the use of hormones, location of major endocrine organs, and functions of specific glands such as the pituitary gland and thyroid gland.
