Technological Advancements in Railways
- Foreign railways have introduced innovations regarding operating performance and maintainability. Three-phase drives technology is being imported for future indigenous manufacture.
Conversion Equipment
- Thyristor use eliminates tap changers, making equipment static and more reliable. Thyristors allow individual motor control, maximizing traction use.
- Indian Railways imported 12 locomotives from Japan and 6 from Sweden (WAG6 series). Experimental thyristor units have been tested in existing locomotives and 25 sets of thyristor control equipment were imported from the UK. These are being installed on 25 kV AC MG EMU coaches.
