Study Notes
The Respiratory System
- Every cell in the body needs oxygen to survive.
Nasal Cavities
- Located within the skull, separated by the nasal septum (a bony plate made of ethmoid bone and vomer).
- Hairs inside the nostrils help block the entry of dust.
Trachea
- Thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage (hyaline cartilage) in the trachea.
- Length of the trachea is approximately 10-13 cm, extending from the larynx to the primary bronchi.
- Tracheal wall contains 16-20 C-shaped pieces of cartilage, which keep the trachea open.
- Gaps in the incomplete cartilage rings are posterior to permit esophageal expansion when food is swallowed.
Lungs
- Located on either side of the heart in the chest cavity.
- Encircled and protected by the rib cage.
Learn about the respiratory system, its importance, and how every cell in the body needs oxygen to survive.
