Study Notes

The Respiratory System

  • Every cell in the body needs oxygen to survive.

Nasal Cavities

  • Located within the skull, separated by the nasal septum (a bony plate made of ethmoid bone and vomer).
  • Hairs inside the nostrils help block the entry of dust.

Trachea

  • Thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage (hyaline cartilage) in the trachea.
  • Length of the trachea is approximately 10-13 cm, extending from the larynx to the primary bronchi.
  • Tracheal wall contains 16-20 C-shaped pieces of cartilage, which keep the trachea open.
  • Gaps in the incomplete cartilage rings are posterior to permit esophageal expansion when food is swallowed.

Lungs

  • Located on either side of the heart in the chest cavity.
  • Encircled and protected by the rib cage.

Learn about the respiratory system, its importance, and how every cell in the body needs oxygen to survive.
