Study Notes
Pathogen Spread and Prevention
- Pathogens are destroyed by the immune system, preventing infection if the body has prior exposure.
- Factors increasing infection risk:
- Age extremes (very young/old)
- Poor nutrition
- Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Existing illnesses or treatments weakening the immune system (e.g., AIDS, cancer treatments)
- Certain medications
- Invasive procedures (e.g., intubation, surgery)
- Invasive devices (e.g., IV lines, catheters)
Pandemic Definition
- A pandemic is a rapid spread of a communicable illness or infection across a country or globally.
- Examples include influenza pandemics, and governments prepare for such events.
Chain of Infection
- Infection development involves interconnected factors, called the "chain of infection."
- Key elements in the chain:
- Pathogen (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites)
- Contact transmission (various ways, e.g., direct/indirect, MROs/GI organisms)
Asepsis and Medical Asepsis
- Asepsis is reducing/eliminating pathogens
- Two levels:
- Medical asepsis: reduces pathogens using techniques
- Surgical asepsis: eliminates all pathogens in a sterile environment
- Hand hygiene is the most important medical aseptic technique preventing infection spread.
Hand Hygiene Moments
- Four key moments for hand hygiene:
- Before any client/environment contact (before touching client, objects)
- Before any procedure
- After body fluid exposure risk (after contact, glove removal)
- After client/environment contact (after leaving room or touching objects)
Handwashing Technique
- Handwashing supplies: soap, paper towels, wastebasket
- Step-by-step handwashing procedure:
- Prepare hands (remove rings, sleeves/watch upwards)
- Warm water and soap application
- Lathering and fingernail cleaning
- Sufficient lathering and rinsing (at least 15-20 seconds, longer if soiled)
- Thorough drying, especially between fingers
- Faucet disinfection with a towel
Alternative Hand Sanitizer Use
- Alcohol-based hand sanitizers (waterless) are alternative hand hygiene options
- Apply to both hands, using the correct amount (3-5 mL).
Additional Hygiene Practices
- Wash hands immediately before and after each client interaction
- Wash hands after visibly soiled contact, blood/body fluid exposure
