What is Ciprofloxacin?
- Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the quinolone antibiotics class.
- It is only available with a doctor's prescription.
Uses of Ciprofloxacin
- Treats serious bacterial infections, including:
- Lung infections
- Skin infections
- Blood infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Stomach and kidney or bladder infections
- Some forms of diarrhea
How to Take Ciprofloxacin
- Take the medication only as directed and do not give it to others.
- The usual dose is taken twice a day (every 12 hours).
- Take the medication half an hour before food, but if it causes stomach upset, take it with food.
- Take the medication with a glass of water and drink several extra glasses of water during the day.
- Avoid taking the medication with milk, as dairy foods reduce its absorption.
What to Do If a Dose is Missed
- Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but not if it's less than four hours before the next dose.
- Do not double-up on doses.
Storing Ciprofloxacin
- Keep the medication locked away out of the reach of children.
- Store it in a cold, dry place, but not in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp, warm places.
Use with Other Medicines
- Be cautious when using ciprofloxacin with other medications, including:
- Theophylline
- Probenecid
- Cyclosporin
- Warfarin or other anticoagulants
- Iron tablets or antacids
- Limit consumption of cola drinks and coffee, as they contain caffeine that can interact with ciprofloxacin.
Important Information
- The manufacturer does not recommend ciprofloxacin for children and young adolescents due to joint problems in young animals.
- Ciprofloxacin is only used in children for serious infections and only for a short time.
- Excessive exposure to sunlight may result in a rash; take precautions to minimize sun exposure.
- Do not take ciprofloxacin if you have had an allergic reaction to it or other quinolone antibiotics.

- Swollen mouth or lips
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
