Ciprofloxacin
Ciprofloxacin
A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that effectively targets gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Mechanism of action of Ciprofloxacin
Mechanism of action of Ciprofloxacin
Ciprofloxacin disrupts the bacterial DNA replication process, preventing the growth and multiplication of pathogens.
Mechanism of resistance to Ciprofloxacin
Mechanism of resistance to Ciprofloxacin

Study Notes
Ciprofloxacin
- Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
- It is effective against Gram-negative bacteria, with moderate activity against Gram-positive bacteria.
- Uses for ciprofloxacin include:
- Dental infections: periodontitis, pericoronitis, gingivitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. Other drugs used in combination include Ofloxacin, Moxifloxacin, and Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole.
- Skin and soft tissue infections (caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
- ENT infections (caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterobacter, Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
- Respiratory tract infections (caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter species, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Serratia)
- Acute cholecystitis (caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli)
- Gastrointestinal issues (such as Traveler's diarrhea, enteric fever, acute gastroenteritis, cholera)
- Liver and intraperitoneal abscesses (caused by Bacteroides fragilis)
- Genitourinary tract infections (caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Enterobacter species, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Haemophilus influenzae)
- Meningitis (caused by Neisseria meningitides, Enterobacter species and Campylobacter fetus)
- Bone and joint infections (caused by Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
- Endocarditis and bacteremia (caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Campylobacter fetus)
- Other infections: Bacteremia (caused by Bacteroides fragilis) Eye infection and cystic fibrosis (caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa), Wound infections (caused by Pasteurella multocida), Chancroid (caused by Haemophilus ducreyi).
- Ciprofloxacin is used in combination with other drugs for various conditions.
- The document also mentions biological warfare agents, such as anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) and plague (Yersinia pestis), where Ciprofloxacin may be used. There are other conditions mentioned in the document like Chlamydial infections (urethritis and cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis), Mycobacterium infections (tuberculosis, disseminated Mycobacterium Avium Complex), and prophylactic uses.
