Study Notes
Body Fluid Distribution
- Total Body Water (TBW) is approximately 38 L, divided into two main compartments: extracellular fluid (10 L) and intracellular fluid (28 L).
- Extracellular fluid makes up about one-third of TBW, while intracellular fluid makes up about two-thirds.
Extracellular Fluid Compartments
- Plasma is the fluid part of the blood, making up nearly half (55%) of the total blood volume.
- Plasma contains ions (Na+, Mg+, Ca+, HCO3-, and Cl-), clotting factors, hormones, glucose, and CO2.
- Interstitial fluid is the fluid surrounding the cells.
- Transcellular fluid is the fluid found in cavities, including cerebrospinal, intraocular, serous, synovial, and urinary tract fluids, and digestive juices.
Hypervolemia and Hypovolemia
- Hypervolemia, or fluid overload, occurs when there is an excess of fluid in the blood.
- Hypervolemia can be caused by high sodium intake or rapid blood transfusion.
- Treatment involves removing excess water and/or adding biomolecules.
- Hypovolemia is the opposite, where there is a deficiency of fluid in the blood.
Fluid Compartments
- Intracellular fluid compartment is the total fluid content of all cells in the body.
- Extravascular fluid compartment includes interstitial fluid, transcellular fluid, and connective tissue fluid.
- Intravascular fluid compartment refers to the fluid within the blood vessels.
Test your knowledge of the different compartments of body fluids including intracellular fluid, extracellular fluid, interstitial fluid, and more. Identify the distribution and types of fluids in various compartments of the body.
