TOP TEN CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE PHILIPPINES 1. Heart Disease ▪ Heart disease is a problem that affects one or more components of the human heart and causes of this is the narrowing or blockage of the heart’s arteries which leads to a heart attack. The increase in the number of heart attacks happens every yuletide season. People are advised to go easy in eating and drinking, quit smoking, start having healthier food choices, having enough rest and a regular exercise. ✓ It is estimated that around 170,000 Filipinos will die each year of this disease. ✓ It is believed that the Philippines rank 79 in terms rate of death with regard to this disease. 2. Stroke Cerebrovascular disease, also known as stroke, happens suddenly but can be prevented by an early diagnosis and treatment of hypertension or high level of cholesterol. Stroke mainly occurs when blood is not supplied to some parts of the brain due to blockage (ischemic stroke) or bursting (hemorrhagic stroke) of a blood vessel in the body. Stroke can strike both the elderly and younger person. Most cases are ISCHEMIC in nature. 3. Cancer There are fifty thousand cancer cases that have been recorded in the Philippines and are increasing by 5% every year, while records show that 16% death cases are due to breast cancer. Various DOH programs do exist, such as an Anti- smoking and Cancer Awareness campaigns. Smoking remains the top preventable cause of cancer in all sexes and in all ages. 4. Pneumonia Bacteria or viruses usually cause pneumonia. Pneumonia usually starts when you breathe the pathogens into your lungs. You may be more likely to get the disease after having a cold or the flu. These illnesses make it hard for your lungs to fight infection, so it is easier to get pneumonia. Common Symptoms Fever Shortness of breath Cough Fatigue Lack of strength The Philippines rank 48 in terms of death in this disease which has a rate of 51 deaths per 100,000 Filipinos. 5. Accidents Major bus crashes happened in Benguet and Cebu because of narrow roads and reckless driving, 1.2 million people worldwide die from road accidents according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Death from accidents are on the rise. The data is largely on the ages 10 to 24 age group which shows increase in traffic-accident-related deaths, a side- effect of urbanization. Other causes of death are drowning-related and occupational-related. 6. Tuberculosis An infectious disease that is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB primarily affects the lungs, but it can also affect organs in the central nervous system, lymphatic system, and circulatory system among others. When a person becomes infected with tuberculosis, the bacteria in the lungs multiply and cause pneumonia along with chest pain, coughing up blood, and a prolonged cough. In addition, lymph nodes near the heart and lungs become enlarged. According to statistics, the Philippines rank number 34 out of nearly 200 countries and territories around the world when it comes to death due to this disease. TB DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short- course) is a TB control strategy recommended by WHO, implemented by the Department of Health. 7. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases Called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) before 1999 Comprises three major diseases, i.e., chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma, all characterized by shortness of breath caused by airway obstruction. Chronic Bronchitis Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to your lungs. The inflamed bronchi produce a lot of mucus. This leads to cough and difficulty getting air in and out of the lungs. Cigarette smoking is the most common cause. Breathing in other fumes and dusts over a long period of time may also cause chronic bronchitis. Treatment will help your symptoms, but chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition that keeps coming back or never goes away completely. Emphysema Involves damage to the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. As a result, the body does not get the oxygen it needs. Emphysema makes it hard to catch your breath. You may also have a chronic cough and have trouble breathing during exercise. The most common cause is cigarette smoking. Treatments include inhalers, oxygen, medications and sometimes surgery to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. Asthma Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways (tubes that carry air into and out of your lungs). Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning. 8. Diabetes Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose or sugar levels are too high based on the food that we eat, along with diabetes comes a number of health complications such as heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. An estimated 4 million Filipinos suffers from diabetes and early diagnosis prevents it from getting worse. According to estimates, there will be at least 6 million Filipinos who will acquire diabetes by 2030. There are already children aged 5 years old diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It is expected that the Philippines will soon join the top 10 nations with diabetes by 2030. Symptoms 3Ps (polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia) Unexplained weight loss Extreme tiredness Irritability Blurred vision Slow-healing cuts and bruises 9. Kidney Failure One of the major functions of the kidney is to clean waste material from the blood but if its not working properly, kidney failure occurs. Stage 5 kidney failure patients requires dialysis but only 50% may be healthy enough to undergo kidney transplant and only 20% can afford the costly life- saving operation. The major causes of kidney disease or failure are due to diabetes and hypertension. Another reason for death with kidney disease is that millions of Filipinos cannot afford treatment as kidney treatment is very expensive. ▪The Philippines is one of the 42 countries that contributes to 90% of global under-five deaths at a ratio of 34 per 1,000 live births. ▪ Of this number, 47% is identified as deaths of infants less than 28 days old. ▪Leading causes of perinatal deaths include diarrhea, pneumonia, sepsis, 10. Perinatal and asphyxia. Conditions
