13 BLOOD BANK ORGANIZATION BLOOD DONOR SELECTION AND PROCESSING The donor screening process is one of the mostlimportant steps in protecting the safety of the blood supply. The process is intended to identify elements of the medical history and behavior or events that put a person at risk for transmissible disease or at personal medical risk. Types of blood donors: 1. Allogeneic donor Voluntary non-remunerated blood donor (VNRBD) RA 7719 - National Blood Services Act of 1994 replaced RA 1517 - Blood Banking Law of 1956 Family/replacement donors Paid donors 2. Autologous donor Safest Patient is the donor 3. Hemapheresis donor donates blood through apheresis 4. Directed donor donation of blood to an identified individual not recommended 5. Recipient-specific "designated" donations Voluntary non-remunerated blood donor (VNRBD) DONATION PROCESS 1. INTERVIEW AND PHYSICAL EXAM A. General Appearance: Appears to be in good health If the donor looks ill, or is excessively nervous, it is best to defer the donation. B. Age: 18-65 years old 16-17 years-old: with parent's consent >65 years-old: with physician's consent C. Body weight: ≥110 lbs or ≥50 kilograms Maximum amount of blood to be drawn: 10.5mL/kg If donor weighs
