Infection Control Dr. Drummelsmith 1 Learning Objectives 1. Differentiate the following terms in the context of infections: nosocomial, healthcare acquired, hospital associated, community acquired, iatrogenic, exogenous source, endogenous source. 2. Explain why nosocomial infections are prevalent. 3. List common causes of nosocomial infection in general, as well as causative agents commonly causing each of the 5 main types of nosocomial infection. 4. Differentiate standard, contact, droplet, and aerosol precautions in terms of what is required for each and for what types of infection each is recommended. 5. Differentiate sterilants, disinfectants (low, intermediate, high), antiseptics, surfactants, and pasteurization. 6. Classify common decontaminating agents or processes according to mechanism of action and type of decontaminant. 7. Explain why most quaternary ammonium compounds are not effective against the non-enveloped noroviruses. 8. List decontamination methods effective against spores. 9. Classify instruments based on the Spaulding scheme. 10.Describe the importance of hand hygiene to transmission of infectious agents, and when it should take place during patient care. What are healthcare-acquired infections? – Definitions, common types Strategies for infection control Antiseptics, sterilants, and disinfectants 3 LOS: GOALS OF INFECTION CONTROL, IMPORTANT TERMS, CAUSES 1.Differentiate the following terms in the context of infections: nosocomial, healthcare acquired, hospital associated, community acquired, iatrogenic, exogenous source, endogenous source. 2.Explain why nosocomial infections are prevalent. 3.List common causes of nosocomial infection in general, as well as causative agents commonly causing each of the 5 main types of nosocomial infection. 4 Infection control—PREVENT and REDUCE HCA = healthcare acquired or associated – infection acquired during a period after the provision of healthcare, most definitions do not include in-hospital HAI = hospital-associated/acquired infection – = Nosocomial – infection appears ≥48h after hospital admission or
