Unit 2 Topic 3 Study Guide Tuesday, October 22, 2024 1. What were the causes of the War of 1812? Causes – impressment of US sailors, violation of the American neutral rights, blockading of American trade, and Britain began forming alliances with Native American nations inside the US 2. What areas of the US supported going to war with Great Britain and why? The South and West, mostly Democratic-Republicans, wanted to fight back against the British violation of neutral rights and they also say this as an opportunity to expand American land claims into Canada and Florida while putting pressure on Britain to stop harassing trade 3. What areas were against it? Why? The Northeast and Federalists were against the war. The northeast did not want trade disrupted and they believed the war was being fought to help Napoleon in his struggle against Great Britain. 4. How did the Federalists resist or react to the war? Some refused to pay taxes, boycotted war loans, and refused to furnish troops. Some even discussed the possibility of the New England states seceding and forming their own country. 5. Who were the Warhawks? Republicans (Democratic-Republicans) in Congress who supported going to war 6. What was the most effective British naval tactic? Describe what that means. What effect did the blockade have? Blockade – blocks ports to stop trading The blockade limited commerce or trading during the war. This hurt the economy and made it difficult for the US to get supplies or sell exports. 7. Why did some Native American tribes form an alliance with the British? The British promised the Native Americans that Native American land would be guaranteed as their own and that land that they had lost to Americans would be given back. 8. What is a confederation? An organization of united groups united as an alliance 9. Who led the Native American confederation that allied with the British? Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader 10. What treaty ended the war? Andrew Jackson – the treaty to end the war had already been signed, but the news had not yet spread 12. How were the Native Americans and the British affected by the War of 1812? Native American resistance to westward American expansion was crushed. Tribes who were on either side of the war lost most of their land east of the Mississippi by the 1830s. Britain lost influence and power over the North American continent. 13. What were the positive results of the victory in the War of 1812? It created a new sense of nationalism, it put the US on equal footing with Great Britain, the Democratic-Republicans gained power to lead the nation while the Federalists lost power for not supporting the war, started the Era of Good Feelings 14. What effect did the War of 1812 have on the Federalist Party? Since they did not support the war, they were seen as unpatriotic and the party began to fade out 15.
