They indicate possession, ownership, or personal relationships with respect to an object, a person, or a place. mi teléfono my phone mi familia my family mi universidad my university Unlike English, Spanish possessive adjectives agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify, and they are always placed before the noun they modify. mi abuela my grandmother tus tíos your uncles sus primas your/their cousins nuestras mascotas our pets nuestros padres our parents Since su and sus can be ambiguous, you can use the construction de + noun/pronoun to indicate the relationship or who the possessor is. Sus padres los padres de él/ella los padres de ustedes los padres de ellos/ellas When reading, look at the context, especially surrounding nouns and pronouns, to help you determine the meaning. When speaking or writing, use this alternate structure to avoid confusion when needed. Infinitive Verb stem Verb ending hablar habl- + -ar Some verbs, for historical reasons, show stem changes from person to person. Stem-changing verbs follow the same pattern of regular verbs, such as hablar, but when they are conjugated, they have a vowel change in the last syllable of the stem. There are three basic types: e>ie querer quiero e>i servir sirvo o>ue poder puedo Follow these steps to form stem-changing verbs: LingroLearning www.lingrolearning.com For more information contact LingroLearning at [email protected] 1 Unidad 6 Resumen gramatical 6-2 Stem-changing present tense verbs These are some common stem-changing verbs: The verb jugar has a unique u>ue stem change: juego, juegas, juega, jugamos, jugáis, juegan. The verb sonreír (to smile) is conjugated following the same pattern of reír (to laugh), and it takes an accent in all forms: sonrío, sonríes, sonríe, sonreímos, sonreís, sonríen. Remember that the verb tener, which you learned in Unidad 3, is irregular and that it has a stem-change from -e to -ie in the tú and él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds. forms: tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen.
