Place Aside from location of stores, Place also refers to the distribution of products i.e. how goods/services make their way from the producer (business) to the consumer (customer.) There are many ways that this can happen, and these are called channels of distribution. 84 LO: This lesson I will evaluate the impact of technology on place. Zero-level channel A zero level channel involves a producer selling directly to a consumer with no one else involved. An example would be a farmer who sells his / her produce directly to people in the local community. Three other examples would include… 1) Hairdressers 2) Make up artists 3) Tailors / seamstresses 85 LO: This lesson I will evaluate the impact of technology on place. One-level channel A one-level channel has other businesses/ agents that act as middlemen who help get the goods/services from the producer to the consumer/customer. There are four types of middlemen that can help with this process. 86 LO: This lesson I will evaluate the impact of technology on place. Wholesalers Wholesalers are businesses that purchase large quantities of products from a producer and then sell them in smaller quantities to retailers (different kinds of shops.) Advantages to the manufacturer: 1) Wholesalers pay for storage 2) Producers deal with less transaction costs (invoices, deliveries etc.) 3) Producers have more time to create new products / services. 87 LO: This lesson I will evaluate the impact of technology on place. Retailers Retailers sell products directly to consumers i.e. any kind of shop. There area few different kinds of retailers. These include… 1) Independent retailers: small independent shops / small shops within other businesses. E.g. H&M 3) Supermarkets: Generally sell food items and a few other household goods: E.g. Spinneys 4) Hypermarkets Huge stores that sell a wide variety of products. E.g. Lulu 88 8.12.f. Examine the principal contemporary contexts of technological innovation and scientific research (Commercial and military) and the implications of these contexts. Distributors Independent shops that sell a range of products from a limited number of producers (could even just be one.) Two examples include: 1) Tech shops (e.g. E-max) 2) Honda showroom 89 LO: This lesson I will evaluate the impact of technology on place. Agents Agents are people who help negotiate a deal between a business and consumers. They usually work for businesses that offer a variety of the same goods / services from a variety of brands. An example of this would be an estate agent who helps people find homes to rent / buy. Three other examples include… 1) Art dealers 2) Travel agents 3) Talent management 90 LO: This lesson I will evaluate the impact of technology on place. Use of technology No matter which channel of distribution a producer chooses, there is now lots of technology out there to help businesses distribute their products to wholesalers, retailers, distributors and agents.
