HJNO IUSANT TYPES OF SPEECH ACT WHAT IS A SPEECH ACT? ➵ A speech act is any utterance that serves a function in communication. ➵ Speech that can be used to make statements, ask questions, apologize, describe, or persuade, among many other uses. ➵ In a speech act, words are used to do something, not just to say something. JOHN L. AUSTIN ➵ A British philosopher, introduced speech act theory in his book How to Do Things with Words. He defined performatives as types of speech where a person's words actively cause something to happen, rather than merely stating something. THREE TYPES OF SPEECH ACT (1962) 1.) Locutionary 2.) Illocutionary 3.) Perlocutionary LOCUTIONARY ➵ A speech act to express something. ➵ This speech act can be referred to as the act of saying something. Examples: Statement: "The sky is blue." Question: "What time is it?" Command: "Close the door." Request: "Can you help me with this?" Assertion: "I have finished my homework." ILLOCUTIONARY ➵ A speech act to do something with the intention conveyed by the speaker. ➵ This speech act is referred to as the act of doing something. Examples: Assertive: "It’s raining outside." (asserting a fact) Directive: "Please turn down the music." (requesting action) Commissive: "I promise to call you tomorrow." (committing to a future action) Expressive: "I’m really sorry for what happened." (expressing regret) Declarative: "I hereby pronounce you husband and wife." (performing an action through speech) PERLOCUTIONARY ➵ A perlocutionary act is a speech act that produces an effect, intended or not, achieved in an address by a speaker's utterance. Examples: Request: "Could you please pass the salt?" — The perlocutionary effect is that the listener feels inclined to pass the salt. Apology: "I'm sorry for being late." — This might make the listener feel reassured or appreciated. Compliment: "You did a great job on that presentation." — This could boost the listener's confidence. Threat: "If you don't stop that, there will be consequences." — The listener might feel fear or anxiety. Invitation: "Would you like to join us for dinner?" — This might make the listener feel welcomed or included. ASSIGNMENT Give 5 characters in your favorite movie/series.
