For a stair c lear width greater than 1 0 0 0 mm, the going of eac h winder should be measured at a distanc e of 270 mm from both its inner and outer extremities. Additionally, the effec tive width of the tread at its narrow end (minimum going) should not be less than 50 mm, and preferably not less than 75 mm. The varying tread widths of a winder c an c ause people to misjudge distanc es and c an lead to falls. For this reason, the use of winders should be avoided. If it is nec essary to use them, they should preferably be situated at the bottom of the flight. Assembly stairs should not c ontain winders. C onsec utive winders should be similar to eac h other.
