WHAT THEN ARE THE ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING? ACCORDING TO STOSIC (2015), 2 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY HAS 3 DOMAINS: Technology as a tutor Technology as a tool Technology as a learning tool TECHNOLOGY AS A TUTOR: 3 Technology can support the teacher to teach another person or technology when programmed by the teacher can be a tutor to its own. TECHNOLOGY AS A TECHING 4 TOOL: Technology is a teaching tool, but can never replace a teacher. Like any other tool, it is being used to facilitate and lighten the work of the teacher. TECHNOLOGY AS A LEARNING 5 TOOL: As a learning tool, it makes learning effective and easy, It can produce learning outcomes that call for technology-assisted teaching. A. FOR TEACHERS AND TEACHING 6 Examples of the myriad of roles that technology can do for teachers and teaching: 1. Technology provides enormous support to the teacher as the facilitator of learning- transform passive classrooms to an active and interactive one, with audio-visual aids, charts and models, smart classroom and etc. 2. Technology has modernized the teaching-learning environment.- assisted and supplemented with appropriately instructional material. 3. Technology improves teaching-learning process and ways to teaching- make the act of teaching more efficient and effective. A. FOR TEACHERS AND TEACHING 7 Examples of the myriad of roles that technology can do for teachers and teaching: 4. Technology opens new fields in educational reaches- areas of testing and evaluation are enhanced by the technologies for teaching and learning. 5. Technology adds to the competence of teachers and inculcates scientific outlooks - theories of learning intelligence, which are explained in references uploaded in the net, embibe skill to source these informationwith speed and accuracy. 6. Technology supports teacher professional development- demand of continuing professional development for teachers, the availability of technology provides alternate way of attending profssional development. B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING 8 There are 3 categories of knowledge according to Egbert (2009): declarative knowledge, structural knowledge, and procedural knowledge. A. Declarative knowledge - consists of the discrete pieces of information that answers the questions what, who, when, and where. It is often learned through memorization of facts, drills and practices. B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING 9 There are 3 categories of knowledge according to Egbert (2009): declarative knowledge, structural knowledge, and procedural knowledge. B. Structural knowledge - consists of facts or pieces of declarative knowledge to put together to attain some form of meaning. B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING 10 There are 3 categories of knowledge according to Egbert (2009): declarative knowledge, structural knowledge, and procedural knowledge. C. Procedural knowledge - is knowledge in action or the knowledge of how to do something. B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING 11 2. Technology enhances learners’ communication skills through social interactions. This is commonly described as the transmittal of information from one person to another as single individual or groups of individual. B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING 12 3 Basic Communication patterns according to Shirly (2003) and Egbert (2009) 1. Point to point two-way or one-to-one like internet chat, phone conversation or even face-to-face conversation. 2. One-to-many outbound like a lecture, or television. There is no social interaction. 3. Many-to-many like group discussion, buzz session, heads together. This kind of interaction provides opportunities for social interaction. B. FOR LEARNERS AND LEARNING 13 3. Technology upgrades learners’ higher- order-thinking skills: critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. Technology has a great role to play in development and enhancement of these skills. CREATIVITY 14 Creativity - characterized as involving the ability to think; flexibility- able to use many POV. fluently- able to generate ideas. originally- being able to generate new ideas. elaborate- able to add details. CREATIVITY 15 7 CREATIVE STRATEGIES (OSBORN, 1963) 1. Substitute- find something else to replace to do what it does. 2. Combine- blend two things that do not usually go together. 3. Adapt- look for other ways this can be used. 4. Modify/Magnify/Minify- make change, enlarge, decrease. 5. Put to another use- find other uses. 6. Eliminate- reduce, remove. 7.
