History and Development of Fashion Accessory Products A fashion accessory is defined as an item used by a wearer to complete any outfit. It is usually chosen to complement one's look. The term fashion accessory was first used in the 19th century. There are two general areas of fashion accessories and these include those that are carried, such as bags, fans, and umbrellas, and those that are worn, such as shoes, ties, hats, belts, watches, scarves, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and stockings. Stone Age hunters about 10,000 years ago already wore simple jewelry. In caves in the Dordogne in France, once inhabited by Cro-Magnon people, the remains of bone pendants and collars of ivory, shells, stag's teeth, and fish vertebrae have been found. The oldest surviving jewelry, dating back to 2,500 BC, was found in the tomb of the Sumerian queen Shub-ad during excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia. The tomb contained earrings, bracelets, golden headdresses, necklaces, rings, and other jewelry. In the 17th century, the diamond became the most prized among gems while floral motifs were the most popular pattern. In the Philippines, before the coming of the Spaniards, natives already wore ornaments. These ornaments were collarless jackets that indicated the position of the wearer in the society. There were also pieces of cloth for the head called putong, which served as headgears, and Jewelry such as necklaces, armlets, earrings, rings, and anklets, which were made of gold and precious stones. Today, craftsmen show interest in using materials such as bone, shells, and pebbles in making accessories like the primitive man but mount them in new and innovative settings. Kinds of Fashion Accessories The best way to understand the kinds of fashion accessories is through body parts. Most, if not all, places in one's body have been the subject of ornamentation at one point. Crowns for the head, headbands for the hair, eyeglasses for the eyes, earrings for the ears, necklaces for the neck, brooches for the chest, bracelets for the wrist, rings for the fingers, belts for the waist, anklets for the ankles, shoes for the feet, and bags to complete the look. These are just examples of the kinds of accessories that are worn together with fashion. Accessories have also become an essential part of handicrafts that are used to tell a story, indicate social class, express values and beliefs, or complete a ceremony. Philippine history makes mention of the lakan and lakambini of the town who were identified by their glorious headwear, footwear, and robes, just like the crowns of their European counterparts of kings and queens. Spiritual leaders were identified by their pendant necklaces or shamans by their masks. In some cases, heirloom artifacts, in the form of an accessory that was passed on from generations, will indicate dynasty and regal roles if worn. But now in the modern times where the design of accessories has become as important and as vital as fashion design, choosing which fashion accessory to wear has become an art, and creating one as a fine art. Accessories can hide flaws in a dress by taking the attention away and moving it toward the jewelry or shoes, but it can also highlight a feature in a dress and complete the ensemble. Important Fashion Accessories Footwear - Footwear is made of different materials such as leathers, natural fabrics, and synthetic fabrics. Although footwear, including shoes, sandals, and boots, serves many functions, it cannot be denied that they also serve as a stylish fashion accessory for men, women, and children.
