Every state has its distinct culture which can be beautifully seen in their costumes. ### Part 2 - Madhya Pradesh - Maharashtra - Manipur - Meghalaya - Mizoram - Nagaland - Odisha - Punjab - Rajasthan - Sikkim - Tamil Nadu - Telangana - Tripura - Uttar Pradesh - Uttarakhand - West Bengal ### **Madhya Pradesh** - **Women:** Lehenga-choli & Saree - **Material**: Cotton & Silk - **Features**: Black and red colours are the most popular colours in the clothes of Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh is also known for its handwoven Maheshwari and Chanderi Sarees. - **Accessories**: Odhani (a scarf that covers the head and shoulders). - **Men:** Dhoti Kurta & Pyjama - **Material**: Cotton & silk - **Features**: Dhoti and kurta are usually white in colour with the dhoti tucked in at the waist and pleated at the front & the kurta has a mandarin collar. Sherwani is worn on special occasions & weddings. - **Accessories**: Mirjai/ Bandi (jacket) and Safa (turban). ### **Maharashtra** - **Women**: Nauvari (9 yard sari) - **Material**: Cotton, Silk & other fine fabrics. - **Features**: Saree is draped with one section worn like a dhoti and the other draped over the shoulder having a thick border. - **Accessories**: Bangles, earrings and necklaces made of gold or silver. - **Men**: Kurta pyjama, or Dhotar (dhoti) - **Material**: Cotton & Silk - **Features**: Clothes are usually plain and white coloured, sometimes decorated with silver/ golden threads. - **Accessories**: The traditional hat is called Pheta and handcrafted Kolhapuri chappals. ### **Manipur** - **Women**: Innaphi and Phanek - **Material**: Handwoven cotton or silk - **Features**: The Manipuri dress is woven with the hand in horizontal line designs. - **Accessories**: Silver jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets and earrings. - **Men**: Dhoti with a jacket or Khamen Chatpa (ritual dhoti) - **Material**: Cotton - **Features**: The superior member of the society wears Khamen Chatpa. It is a ritual dhoti. - **Accessories**: The white turban called Pagri. ### **Meghalaya** - **Women**: Jainsem - **Material**: Handwoven cotton or silk - **Features**: Jainsem is a cylindrical garment draped around the body and is usually worn with a long-sleeved jacket called "Jainkup" and a scarf called "Tapmohkhlieh." - **Accessories**: Silver jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets and earrings. - **Men**: Jymphong & Jainboh (red colour dhoti). - **Material**: Handwoven cotton or silk for Jainsem, wool for Tapmohkhlieh. - **Features**: Jymphong is a long sleeveless coat. It is decorated with yellow lines and floral motifs as well as the symbolic red cock motif with a v-shaped neck (opening) It is usually deep blue in colour. - **Accessories**: Metal sword and silver jewellery. ### **Mizoram** - **Women**: Puan (a wrap-around skirt) and Kawrchei or Thingchawng ( a top). - **Material**: Handwoven cotton, silk or a blend of both. - **Features**: Puan has a distinctive pleating style and Kawrchei/ Thingchawng is a blouse with a unique collar design. - **Accessories**: A shawl called 'Tawlkhawm' is worn over the head or around the shoulders and traditional Mizo jewellery made of beads or silver is also worn, Vakiria (headgear made of bamboo and feathers) - **Men**: Puanchei/ Puandum and Koteka/ Khumbeu. - **Material**: Handwoven cotton or silk. - **Features**: Unique pleating style and collar with a buttoned-up front. - **Accessories**: Thick Khuang shawl. ### **Nagaland** - **Women**: Mekhela - **Material**: Cotton & Silk - **Features**: Mekhela is a long, cylindrical skirt which is wrapped around the waist and secured with a belt. A colourful shawl called "lotha" is draped over the shoulder and fastened at the waist, completing the outfit. - **Accessories**: A beaded necklace called "pfemhou" and bangles made of bamboo or brass. - **Men**: Kachari or Kho and Lotha - **Material**: cotton, silk or wool - **Features**: Kachari is a wrap-around skirt-like cloth and lotha is a shawl and is usually adorned with tassels or fringes. - **Accessories**: Tenyimia (a woven bamboo hat adorned with feathers or other decorative items). ### **Odisha** - **Women**: Sambhalpuri Saree and Khandua Saree - **Material**: Cotton & Silk - **Features**: Sambhalpuri saree is a hand-knit ikat in which the weft and warp are tied together before the weaving process. Khandua Saree is also very popular among women because Lord Jagannath's idol is decorated with it. - **Accessories**: Shanka Palaa is a pair of white and red bangles - **Men**: Dhoti kurta, pyjama and sherwani - **Material**: Cotton and silk - **Features**: Most of the grooms in Odisha prefer to wear Sherwani during their wedding. - **Accessories**: Gamcha ### **Punjab** - **Women**: Salwar Kameez - **Material**: Cotton, silk, chiffon - **Features**: Phulkari embroidery designs on colourful scarfs or dupattas. - **Accessories**: Bangles, earrings, necklaces, paranda & Juttis made of leather or fabric. - **Men**: Kurta pyjama, or Punjabi lungi called Tehmat/ Tamba. - **Material**: Cotton and silk - **Features**: Some kurtas are decorated with intricate embroidery and block prints. - **Accessories**: Embroidered Jutti made of leather and a Turban made of a long cloth wrapped around the head. ### **Rajasthan** - **Women**: Ghagra-choli with Odhani. - **Material**: Lightweight Cotton, Silk or Chiffon - **Featured art**: Bandhani, block printing, gota patti, embroidery and mirror work. - **Accessories**: Mojari, chokers, bangles and earrings made of gold, silver or stones. - **Men**: Kurta pyjama, Angrakha & Dhoti - **Material**: Cotton and Silk - **Features**: Curved bend turban (Safa) and embroidery on clothes. - **Accessories**: Mojari and a turban called Saafa. Jewellery may also be worn, such as necklaces, earrings, etc. ### **Sikkim** - **Women**: Kira - **Material**: Handwoven fabric - **Features**: The Kira is a two-piece garment consisting of a long skirt and a blouse. The skirt is ankle-length, with pleats at the waist and the blouse is usually short-sleeved. - **Accessories**: A decorative wrap around the waist called "Kera," a shawl called "Khar" and jewellery like necklaces, earrings and bracelets. - **Men**: Kho or Bakhu - **Material**: Cotton, silk, crepe silk, organza, georgette and patola silk. - **Features**: The Kho or Bakhu is a loose, cloak-style garment that is fastened at the neck on one side and near the waist with a cloth belt. Men often wear white or off-white shirts underneath the bakhu and pair them with trousers. - **Accessories**: Sometimes men wear a cap called Toppa or Dhaka. ### **Tamil Nadu** - **Women**: Kancheepuram saree and half saree - **Material**: Cotton, silk, crepe silk, organza, georgette and patola silk. - **Features**: Half saree is called pavada in Tamil Nadu and it is a combination of a full-length skirt with a short blouse and a shawl known as Davani. Zari work is prominently seen on the Kancheepuram sarees - **Accessories**: Flowers in hair. - **Men**: Dhoti/ Lungi, Kurta & Angavastram - **Material**: Cotton and Silk - **Features**: Dhoti and lungi have simple patterns or borders. Angavastram may have intricate designs and patterns. - **Accessories**: Angavastram is draped over the shoulder. ### **Telangana** - **Women**: Langa Voni or Half Saree. Pochampally and Gadwal sarees are some other popular sarees. - **Material**: Cotton & Silk - **Features**: Pochampally weave is also known as ikkat. Mostly, the colour of the Saree is white, sometimes red or Maroon, Gold or Green added with gold ornaments. - **Accessories**: Gold jewellery and flowers in hair. - **Men**: Dhoti/ Panche/ Lungi, Kurta and Hyderabadi Sherwani - **Material**: Cotton and Silk - **Features**: Dhoti & Kurta are white in colour and have simple patterns or borders. Angavastram may have intricate designs and patterns. Sherwani is worn during marriages and grand functions. - **Accessories**: Angavastram draped over the shoulder. ### **Tripura** - **Women**: Rignai & Risa - **Material**: Cotton or silk. - **Features**: Rignai is like a draped skirt. Each clan of Tripura has a different pattern of Rignai. Risa is worn by draping around the back twice to provide protection and support to the chest. - **Accessories**: Necklace of coins, bangles and nose ring made of silver or bronze. - **Men**: Rikutu Gamcha with Kubai - **Material**: Cotton or silk - **Features**: The daily work costume of a full-grown male is a towel-like sheet of loincloth, called Rikutu Gamcha, topped off by a self-woven shirt, called Kubai. - **Accessories**: To combat the blazing heat, men resort to a pagri, i.e. a turban. ### **Uttar Pradesh** - **Women**: Sarees and salwar kameez. - **Material**: Cotton or silk. - **Features**: The bride typically wears a lehenga choli on the wedding day and everyday wears a salwar kameez or saree for everyday use. - **Accessories**: Traditional jewellery, bindis, mangal sutras and footwear like sandals or juttis. - **Men**: Dhoti, Kurta, Pyjama and Sherwani - **Material**: Cotton or silk - **Features**: Dhoti and kurta are usually white in colour with the dhoti tucked in at the waist and pleated at the front & the kurta has a mandarin collar. Sherwani is worn on special occasions & weddings. - **Accessories**: sandals or mojaris. ### **Uttarakhand** - **Women**: Saree or salwar kameez. - **Material**: Cotton or wool - **Features**: The saree is worn on the front side. The pallu is worn on the front and knotted on the shoulder. This traditional look is pulled together with a waistband, made of cloth. The saree is worn with Angra (full-sleeved blouse). - **Accessories**: "Hansuli" - a type of silver or gold necklace worn by married women. - **Men**: Kurta and Pyjama - **Material**: Cotton or silk - **Features**: Kurta is a long shirt up to the knees, that is usually adorned with traditional work done by the artisans in Uttarakhand. Kurta is paired with pyjamas (loose pants). - **Accessories**: Pahari Topi or pagri ### **West Bengal** - **Women**: Korial and Garad sarees - **Material**: Tussar Silk, Muslin Cotton, Kanth silk and Murshidabad silks. - **Features**: Bengali Korial and garad sarees have bright red borders and stripes in the pallu offset against the undyed white silk. different birds, flowers and geometric prints can be seen on sarees. - **Accessories**: Bengali ivory/ conch shell and red lacquered bangles. - **Men**: Panjabi (the equivalent of a kurta) paired with a dhoti. - **Material**: Tussar-silk, cotton-silk or muga-silk - **Features**: Kurta is embroidered with kantha around the neckline and buttonholes.
