Theories Related to Maternal and Child Nursing Prepared by: Diana Vem P. Lazaro, RN Family Systems Theory by Murray Bowen A theory of human behavior that views the family as an emotional unit and uses system thinking to describe the unit’s complex interactions. Families so profoundly affect their members’ THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, and ACTIONS that it often seems as if people are living under the same “emotional skin”. People solicit each other’s attention, approval, and support, and they react to each other’s needs, expectations, and upsets. Family Systems Theory by Murray Bowen APPLICATION: It helps Nurses understand family interactions and their impact on Maternal and Child Health, guiding interventions that involve family dynamics. Social LearningTheory by Albert Bandura A theory emphasizing that people learn new behaviors by the role of observation, imitation, and modeling in learning behaviors. APPLICATION: Nurses can use this to promote positive health behaviors by modeling and reinforcing healthy practices for parents and children. Cognitive Development by Albert Bandura A theory describes how children’s thinking and understanding evolve through stages. APPLICATION: Helps Nurses provide age- appropriate care and guidance to children and their families, including education on developmental milestones and parenting strategies. Nursing Theories: Environmental Theory by F. Nightingale A theory emphasizes the impact of the environment on health, which is relevant in creating optimal conditions for Maternal and Child Health. Nursing Theories: Human Caring Theory by Jean Watson A theory focusing on the humanistic aspexts of nursing care, emphasizing compassion and the Nurse-Patient relationship, which is crucial in maternal and child health settings. Nursing Theories: Self-Care Deficit Theory by Dorothea Orem Addresses the role of self-care in health and how nurses can support individuals in meeting their self-care needs. This theory is relevant in helping mothers manage their health and the health of their children. Health Belief Model by Becker adb Rosenstock Emphasizes that health behaviors are influenced by individual perceptions of health risks and benefits, as well as barriers and cues to action. APPLICATION: In M&C Nsg, this model can help in designing interventions that address mother’s beliefs and perceptions about health practices and preventive care. Attachment Theory by John Bowlby Focuses on the importance of early emotional bonds between children and their caregivers and how these bonds affect later emotional and psychological development. APPLICATION: Nurses can use this theory to guide practices that support secure attachment between mothers and their infants, such as promoting skin-to-skin contact and responsive parenting. Planned Behavior Theory by Icek Ajzen Suggests that behavior is driven by intentions, which are influenced by attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. APPLICATION: Nurses can apply this to better understand and promote health behaviors in pregnant women and parents, such as adherence to prenatal care or breastfeeding practices.. Bioecological SystemsTheory by Urie Bronfenbrenner Emphasizes the complex interplay between individuals and their environments. It considers multiple levels of influence, from immediate family to broader societal factors. APPLICATION: Helps Nurses understand how various environmental factors, such as family dynamics, socioeconomic status, and cultural influences, impact maternal and child health. Thank you! Activity 1. Analyze the role of nurses in Maternal and Child Nursing in promoting health and preventing disease. Examine specific programs or interventions that nurses might implement to address common health issues such as obesity, substance abuse, or mental health concerns among pregnant women and children. How do these initiatives contribute to long-term health outcomes? 2. Explore the ethical challenges faced by nurses in Maternal and Child Nursing, particularly in relation to patient autonomy and informed consent. Provide an analysis of how nurses can advocate for the rights and preferences of their patients while maintaining professional and ethical standards. Consider scenarios in the Philippines. 3. Examine or assess the current Maternal and Child Healthcare delivery in your community. Discuss how nurses in maternal and child nursing can integrate their roles within interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes. Include specific examples of collaboration with obstetricians, pediatricians, and social workers. How does this teamwork model improve both maternal and child health? 4. Study and discuss the Family Systems Theory. 5. How can nurses use this theory to facilitate family- centered care and enhance the overall health and well-being of both the mother and child?
