Primary goal of maternal and child nursing care o Promotion and maintenance of health The health care provider should ensure that every pregnant mother must maintain good health and knows the art of childcare and raise healthy child. o It starts from the time before the child is born until they reach adolescent stage The entire patient’s family, the culture, socio- economic status and others must be taken into consideration Care for ideally every child should: o live in grows up in a family with love and belongingness, safety and security and receive sufficient nutrition. GOAL Primary goal of the maternal and child health nursing care can be stated simply as: o The promotion and maintenance of optimal family health to ensure cycles of optimal childbearing and childrearing. FOUR PHASES OF HEALTH CARE Health Promotion o Educating clients to be aware of good health through teaching and role modeling â–ª Teaching women the importance of rubella immunization before pregnancy â–ª Teaching children the importance of safer sex practices Health Maintenance o Intervening to maintain health when risk of illness is present â–ª Encouraging women to come for prenatal care â–ª Teaching parents the importance of safeguarding their home by child proofing it against poisoning Health Restoration o Promptly diagnosing and treating illness using interventions that will return client to wellness moves rapidly â–ª caring for a woman during a complication of pregnancy or a child during an acute illness Health Rehabilitation o Preventing further complications from an illness o Bringing an ill client back to an optimal state of wellness or helping a client to accept inevitable death â–ª Encouraging a woman with gestational trophoblastic disease to continue therapy or a child with a renal transplant to continue to take necessary medications. STANDARDS OF CARE - (American Nurses Association/Society of Pediatric Nurses Standards of Care and Professional Performance) - Comprehensive nursing care focuses on helping children and their families and communities achieve their optimum health potentials. - This is best achieved within the framework of family-centered care and the nursing process, including primary, secondary, and tertiary care coordinated across health care and community settings. Standard V: Implementation â—‹ A nurse implements the interventions identified in the plan of care. Standard VI: Evaluation â—‹ A nurse evaluates the child’s and family’s progress toward attainment of outcomes. STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE - (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses Standards and Guidelines) Standard I: Quality of Care â—‹ a nurse systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of pediatric nursing practice. Standard II: Performance Appraisal â—‹ a nurse evaluates his or her own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations. Standard III: Education â—‹ a nurse acquires and maintains current knowledge and competency in pediatric nursing practice.
