STAGE 4 Unit focus: Summer Holidays Detective Agency Text focus: Narrative The Case Of The cursed comic book Chapter 3 “You made me jump!” Kimmy yelped, desperately grabbing for her phone. She shook the water from it and quickly dried it on her t-shirt. “It’s real!” “Why did you read it?” Edward asked. “We weren’t sure if it was real,” Mo said. “We wanted to test it scientifically.” “What does it mean for me?” Ola asked quietly. “This is ridiculous,” Mo wailed. “There is no curse. There are reasonable explanations for all of these things. Nothing will happen to you, Ola. We are the Summer Holidays Detective Agency. We investigate things. Let’s properly think about this.” “There’s only one explanation,” Edward said. “It’s the curse. We are all doomed.” Mo rolled his eyes. “Why hasn’t anything bad happened to Ola, then?” “I haven’t left the shed yet,” she answered. “I don’t really want to.” “This is crazy! Let’s go and get some ice cream and think about this sensibly. Leave the comic here so that we aren’t tempted to read any more of it.” Mo stood up and raised his eyebrows. “Come on, it’ll be fun.” Reluctantly, the others got to their feet. “What’s that smell?” Ola asked, wrinkling her nose. The other sniffed. “No idea,” Mo said, “but it’s not nice. Let’s get out of here and into the fresh air.” Their village wasn’t very large, and it didn’t take the four children long to walk to the newsagents in the middle. They bought themselves iced lollies and found a seat on a bench on the village green. “See? Nothing bad has happened,” Mo said through a mouthful of fruit-flavoured ice. Ola looked unsure, almost as though she was annoyed at the fact. “Maybe.” As the ice creams were consumed and the sun shone down on them, the children began to feel a little bit better about the curse. “It’s almost a shame that we didn’t have a mystery to solve, after all,” Edward said, eventually. “I do love solving them.” all resources ©2024 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com “There’s still the rest of the summer holidays,” Kimmy said. “I’m sure we’ll get ourselves involved in one somehow. We usually do.” “I can’t believe you guys thought there really was a curse,” Mo said with a chuckle. “What if we are only cursed whilst we have the comic with us?” Kimmy asked. “We left it back at the shed, and nothing has happened. Maybe we just need to get rid of it, and we’ll be fine?” Mo sighed. “We’ll be fine anyway.” He leapt to his feet and turned to face the others on the bench. “I keep telling you. There’s no curse.” He caught the look on his friends’ faces. “What?” “Your butt,” Edward said, pointing. Mo bent around until he could see his own bottom. “What happened?” he yelped. The other three stood up and checked out their own behinds. “Fresh paint,” Ola said, holding up a sign that had fallen into the long grass. “We sat on a freshly painted bench.” VOCABULARY FOCUS 1.
