STAGE 3 Unit focus: Summer Holidays Detective Agency Text focus: Narrative The Case Of The Missing Lunch Boxes Chapter 4 “What was that?” Edward was out of breath by the time they reached the beach. The others followed closely behind. “It sounded like something inside the rocks,” Kimmy said, sucking down a lungful of air. “Pirate ghosts!” Mo shouted. Ola rolled her eyes at him. “I grabbed this just before we heard the sound,” she said, pulling a dirty scrap of paper out of her pocket. “It’s covered in old-fashioned writing. I can’t really read what it says.” “Let me have a look,” Kimmy said. “I used to do calligraphy with my mum.” Kimmy took the piece of paper and began to read the faded writing: We took what remained of the loot further into the cave. We retreated here under fire. The dreaded Redbeard and her crew chased us round the cove, and we ran ashore. They have the caves surrounded. If this message reaches you, send help. Captain Rudolph Horn. “It was pirates!” Mo was beside himself with joy. “I knew it.” Even Ola looked excited at the news. Finally, there was a real mystery with hidden treasure for the Summer Holidays Detective Agency to get their teeth into. “Let’s go and see if we can find the treasure,” Edward said, heading back towards the cave. “I bet it’s down that other tunnel.” “We can’t. We’ve not got a torch,” Kimmy reminded him. “Plus, there’s the pirate ghosts,” Mo added. “I’m sure it wasn’t ghosts,” Ola said severely. Edward puffed out his cheeks. “There’s a torch back at the caravan. What time is it?” “Just after one,” Ola said. “We’ve still got a lot of daylight left if we want to go back in.” They all looked at each other, daring the others to give them a reason not to go back into the cave. “It looks like we’re going treasure hunting,” Mo said. The grin on his face betrayed his emotions. all resources ©2024 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com Edward set off at a sprint to fetch his torch whilst the others sat around on the beach. Mo disappeared for a few minutes to fetch his Frisbee, which he’d forgotten in the excitement of discovering the cave. “What do you think they hid?” Kimmy asked as they tossed the toy to each other. “I bet it’s a mountain of gold,” Mo said. Ola looked less sure. “It might just be something like an old coat, knowing our luck.” Soon after, Edward returned holding a large torch over his head like a club. “I brought some spare batteries, just in case,” he said. “I also grabbed my sister’s mobile phone in case we need to phone for help.” It didn’t take them long to find their way back through the tunnels and into the main cavern. Now that they knew what they were looking for, they didn’t bother with any of the other passageways. As soon as they entered the space, they heard the same noise as before. It was loud and echoed around them, a steady chipping sound. “I think something is trying to break out of the stones,” Mo whimpered. Ignoring their fears, they set off into the new tunnel. After a few metres, they stopped in their tracks. In front of them, an old man was standing bathed in the light of a head torch. He had an enormous and sharp pick in his hands. “Who are you?” he asked, “and what are you doing in my cave?” RETRIEVAL FOCUS 1. Who found the letter? 2. Who read it? 3.
