STAGE 4 Unit focus: Summer Holidays Detective Agency Text focus: Narrative The Case Of The cursed comic book “The curse!” Ola screamed. Chapter 2 “I knew it was true!” Edward added. “Don’t feel the need to help me up,” Mo whimpered, dragging himself to his feet. “I just fell over, that’s all. It’s nothing to do with the comic book.” The others took a step back from him. “It’s not going to be contagious!” he wailed. “Let’s just get back to the shed and read the thing.” Mo stormed away from his friends, pausing only to unlatch the gate to Kimmy’s back garden. By the time the others caught up with him, he was sat on the sofa with his jean leg rolled up and his bloodied knee out. “It’s just a scratch,” he said. Kimmy popped into her house and returned with a wad of tissue paper. “It’s a pre y big coincidence,” she said. “You’re the only one who read the comic book and then you go flying.” “There’s a perfectly reasonable explanation,” Mo argued. “I just don’t know what it is yet.” “I don’t believe in curses,” Edward said. He pulled the comic out of his pocket and opened the packet. “See! Nothing is happening. What?” he asked. He could see how wide the other children’s eyes were. “Your face and arms are covered in a strange rash,” Ola said. “You’ve got the plague!” “I’ve not got the plague.” Edward looked down at his arms. “What is that?” he shouted. “It’s the curse,” Kimmy whispered. “It’s true.” Edward dropped the comic book onto the floor. It fell open at the middle pages. “Nobody look at it!” Ola shouted. She reached out with her eyes closed and grabbed it up. She wedged it underneath the cushions of the sofa. “That looks really serious,” Mo said to Edward. “It’s a bit itchy,” he replied. “We need to tell an adult,” Kimmy suggested. She grabbed her phone and began to search for red rashes and what they might mean. Edward shook his head. “It’s fine! I feel fine. Plus, if it really is a curse, what can they do about it?” “Go and have a shower,” Ola suggested. “See if it’s be er a er that. If not, we really need to show Kimmy’s mum.” all resources ©2024 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com Edward disappeared into Kimmy’s house whilst the others tried to decide what to do next. Kimmy’s mum brought them all glasses of water out and looked very confused when they told her Edward had nipped for a shower. “It’s still only two things,” Mo pointed out. “That’s not really scientific proof.” “What are you suggesting?” Ola looked worried. “I’ll read it,” Kimmy said. Her face looked stern but worried. “If it really is cursed, then something bad should happen to me. If it doesn’t, then it was just coincidence.” “I’ll do it with you,” Ola said. The other two looked at her aghast. “If Kimmy’s going to be cursed, then we might as well all be cursed together.” Ola grabbed the comic from underneath the cushion. “Are you sure about this?” Mo asked. “You don’t have to be heroes.” Ola nodded. Kimmy took a gulp of water from her glass and nodded. “Here we go.” They both stared down at the page and began to read out loud. “What are you both doing?” Edward shouted, bursting into the shed. Kimmy jolted back, knocking her elbow into her phone. It fell from the shelf and landed in her glass of water. RETRIEVAL FOCUS 1. How did Edward try to get rid of the rash? 2.
