We listen for what’s behind the words.  THE SEMANTIC OF COMMUNICATION The study of meaning in the Language The meaning and interpretation of words,signs, and sentence structure.  WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? From a linear perspective: Communication is the process or act of transmitting a message from a sender to a receiver, through a channel and with the interference of noise.  From an interactive perspective:  Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behaviour.  From an Etymological perspective:  The word communication is derived from the Latin word, communis, which means common.  The definition underscores the fact that unless a common understanding results from the exchange of information, there is no communication. From a symbolic perspective: Communication uses symbols to represent things, processes, ideas, or events. These symbols are arbitrary constructions that represent a communicator’s though. From a pragmatic perspective: Pragmatics defines as any sign- mediated interaction that follows combinatorial, context-specific and content-coherent rules The use of a set of sociolinguistic rule related to language within a communicative context.  One example of pragmatics in language would be if one person asked, "What do you want to eat?" and another responded, "Ice cream is good this time of year." The second person did not explicitly say what they wanted to eat, but their statement implies that they want to eat ice cream.  From the definition, given, what makes communication an interesting human phenomenon? Which among the definitions strike you the most? How do these definitions contribute to a deeper understanding of communication? From groups of five members each. Choose one definition discussed and present a role-paly that explains it.
