How the distinct characteristics of their artworks are reflected in the wide array of exquisite textiles, crafts, architecture, ceramics, woodcarving, and leatherwork. The Southeast Asia Southeast Asia The Southeast Asian collection embraces the art of Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Burma, Laos, Indonesia and the Philippines, focusing on stone and metal religious sculpture and ceramics as well as textiles, which play an integral role in social relationships and ceremonies. The Arts of THAILAND & CAMBODIA Formerly known as Siam, Thailand is known for being the sole nation in Southeast Asia that has never been ruled by a Western power. It is for this reason that the country is also called “Muang Thai,” which means “Land of the Free.” Cambodia, country on the Indochinese mainland of Southeast Asia. Cambodia is largely a land of plains and great rivers and lies amid important overland and river trade routes linking China to India and Southeast Asia. Wayang Kulit ART FORMS THAILAND Chut Thai means “Thai outfit” and it is the traditional clothing worn in the A Land of Smiles. There are many types of chut Thai, with more modern types T used as the nation’s official clothing. T In Thailand’s past, men and women both wore a cotton or silk wrap-around garment I called a Chong Kraben. Tied around the waist and wrapped similar to a loose R loincloth, men wore theirs short to the middle of the thigh, while women covered to around the shin. E It was normal for both men and women to be topless in times gone by. ART FORMS CAMBODIA Sampot is the traditional costume of A Cambodia. It is a long, rectangular cloth worn around the lower body T and tied up at the belly with various colors and patterns. T Origin of Sampot I The Sampot dates back to the R Funan era when a Cambodian king ordered the people of his kingdom to wear the sampot at the request of E Chinese envoys. Sampot is also the Royal ballet costume of Cambodia.
