The elements of arts that were applied are color, texture, and shape, while the principles of design applied are contrast and unity. Silk Fabrics Thai silk is produced from the cocoons of Thai silkworm. It is mainly produced in Khorat which is the center of the silk industry in Thailand. Silk Fabrics Silk Fabrics Thai weavers from this region raise the caterpillars on a steady diet of mulberry leaves. ARTS AND CRAFTS Loi Kratong: Flying Lantern It is an example of arts and crafts from Thailand. The elements of arts that were applied are color, texture, shape, and space, while the principles of design applied are contrast, unity, and movement. Loi Kratong: Flying Lantern Sky lanterns These are traditional balloons made from thin, biodegradable rice paper stretched over a bamboo frame. The base of the lantern typically holds a small disc of solid fuel, often made from a mixture of wax and a flammable material, or a small candle. When the fuel is lit, the heat generated creates hot air inside the lantern, causing it to rise and float into the sky. In Thailand, sky lanterns, also known as flying lanterns or wish lanterns, are a significant part of the Loi Krathong Festival, which is celebrated on the night of the 12th full moon, typically in November. During this festival, people release lanterns into the sky to symbolize the letting go of misfortunes and to make wishes for the future. The tradition has become especially popular on the main tourist beaches of Phuket, where visitors join in the celebration by launching these lanterns, creating a mesmerizing display of lights floating through the night sky. SCULPTURES Sculpture is the action or art of making statues by carving or chiseling (as in wood or stone), by modeling (as in clay), or by casting (as in melted metal) in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-dimensional art objects. The designs may be embodied in freestanding objects, in reliefs on surfaces, or in environments ranging from tableaux to contexts that envelop the spectator. Thailand is world-famous for its sculpture that dates back 4,000 years ago. The most commonly used materials are wood, stone, ivory, clay, and various metals. The most notable sculptures are the Thai bronzes famous for their originality and grace. WAT PHO This famous sculpture in Wat Pho in Bangkok is 46 meters long and 15 meters high. It is made of plaster on a brick core and finished in gold leaf. The feet are inlaid with mother of pearl. WAT PHO THE RECLINING BUDDHA AT WAT PHO A giant statue of Buddha in a very comfortable position. You’ll need to take your shoes off to enter, and if you’d like a little good luck, we recommend purchasing a bowl of coins at the entrance of the hall which you can drop in the 108 bronze bowls which line the length of the walls. THE RECLINING BUDDHA AT WAT PHO Dropping the small pennies in makes a nice ringing sound and even if your wishes don’t come true, the money goes towards helping the monks renovate and preserve Wat Pho. As this is a revered image, all visitors must wear appropriate clothing – no exposed shoulders or skin above the knee.
