Terminology #2: Human Movement 1. Abduction = Movement away from the midline (abd) 2. Adduction = Movement toward the midline (add) 3. Flexion = Bending a joint; decreasing the angle between 2 bones (✓) 4. Extension = Straightening a joint; increasing the angle between 2 bones (/) 5. Circumduction = a conical motion made by moving a straight limb in a circular motion 6. External rotation = turning the limb away from the midline of the body (ER) 7. Internal rotation = turning the limb towards the midline of the body (IR) 8. Eversion = ankle movement in which the foot rolls away from the midline (ev) 9. Inversion = ankle movement in which the foot rolls toward the midline (inv) 10. Dorsiflexion = ankle movement in which the toes move towards the shin (DF) 11. Plantarflexion = ankle movement in which the toes point down (PF) 12. Pronation = a slight inward rolling motion (pron) 13. Supination = an outward rolling motion (sup) 14. Valgus = Outward angulation of the distal segment of a bone or joint 15. Varus = inward angulation of the distal segment of a bone or joint
