Prof. Demet TEKİN/ Lecturer Çağdaş Işıklar (PT, MSc) A-) GENERAL TERMINOLOGY LATERAL • On the side; the side of the body LESION • Traumatism or morbid, organic or functional change of tissues LIMITATION • Restraint, suppression LOCAL • Related to a limited and specific part of the body LOCALIZED • Limited or separated tumor, infection, lesion, etc. in a certain area. LOCALIZATION • Locating a morbid process or lesion LONGITUDINAL • Parallel to the body axis MAXIMUM • At the most; as great or high as possible MALFORMATION • A congenital anomaly in an organ or part of the body MALIGN • A serious and fatal disease or tumor MANUEL • Made or performed by hand; relating to the hands MATURITE • The state of being fully developed MINIMAL • Lowest, least MEDIUS • The middle or intermediate part of an anatomical structure MEDIAL • Closest to the body's axis of symmetry; near the midline; relating to the midline MEMBRAN • Thin outer covering of an anatomical structure; thin layer of tissues with different functions MENTAL • Related to mind, memory, consciousness, intelligence METASTASIS • Transfer of local manifestations of a disease (especially cancer) to other parts of the body LARYNX • A muscle-cartilage complex organ that plays the main role in air conduction and sound production in the front of the neck, below the pharynx, above the trachea, and inside the thyroid gland. MINOR • Smaller, lesser, insignificant, immature • Adjective used to describe the smaller of two similar structures MOBILE • Movable, active MODIFIED • Changed, altered MONARTHRITIS • Inflammation in a joint MORTALITY • The state of being dead or mortal in living things • Mortality rate from the same disease MORBIDITY • The condition of suffering from a disease • The sum or proportion of diseases affecting a person or community at a given time MORPHOLOGY • The branch of science that investigating the shapes and structures of living things MULTIFACTORIAL • Involving or dependent on several factors MULTIPLE • Many, segmented; having or involving several parts, elements, or members NATAL • Relating to the place or time of one's birth • Natalis in Greek= Birth NEONATAL • Relating to newborn children NECROSIS • Degeneration event that causes destruction or fragmentation of a cell or tissue; a condition marked by the loss of viability (death) of cells or tissues NONINFLAMMATORY • Not accompanied by or associated with inflammation NONSPECIFIC • Not assignable to a particular cause, condition, or category NONTOXIC • Not poisonous NUTRITION • Nourishment; the process of providing or obtaining the food OBESE • Grossly fat OBESITY • General hypertrophy of adipose tissue; excessive fat accumulation in the subcutaneous connective tissue in the body OBSTETRIC • Medical science involving the subjects of childbirth and pregnancy OBSTRUCTION • Prevented or forced of the passage of liquid substances through a passage in the organism OBSTRUCTIVE • Causing obstruction AUDIOLOGY • The branch of science dealing with hearing and hearing disorders AUDIOMETRY • Techniques or methods for measuring the power or degree of hearing OCCLUSION • Closure or obstruction of a natural cavity (vessel, bowel, etc.) OCCIPITAL • Of or relating to the occiput OCULAR • Anatomically related to the eye ONCOLOGY • The branch of medicine that deals with the investigation and treatment of tumors ORIGIN • The starting point or source of something OROFACIAL • Pertaining to the mouth and face ORTHOSTATIC • Of, relating to, or caused by an upright posture • Orthostatic means an upright posture AUSCULTATION • Clinical examination in the form of listening to the sounds coming from the organism directly by leaning the ear to the patient or by placing a stethoscope between the patient and the ear. B-) ORTHOPEDIC TERMINOLOGY LORDOSIS • An increased inward curving of the lumbar spine LUXATION • Disturbance from a proper, original, or usual place or state LUMBAR • Relating to the lower part of the back LUMBOCOSTAL • Relating to the waist and ribs LUMBOSACRAL • Relating to the waist and sacrum LIGAMENT • Resistant, less flexible, fibrous fibers that bind bone fragments together, especially in joints or organs or body compartments MANIPULATION • The act of doing some work and movement by hand MANIPULATIVE • Hand-guided, hand-operated MYALGIA • Muscle pain MYOFIBRIL • Long and thin muscle fibers that change shape according to the type of muscle and form the characteristic element of all contractile tissues. MYOGENIC • Originating from muscle or muscle tissue MYOSITIS • Inflammation of muscle tissue (primitive or secondary) due to a systemic infection or other inflammation MOBILIZATION • Restoring movement to an organ that has lost its ability to move • Releasing an organ or formation whose movements are restricted by any obstacle and gaining movement MUSCULAR • Relating to muscle, consisting of muscle tissue MUSCULOCUTANEOUS • Relating to muscle and skin MUSCULOTENDINOUS • Relating to both muscle and tendon ORTHOPEDICS • The branch of science dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of bone, joint, muscle and tendon disorders or diseases OSTEOTOMY • Surgical cutting of a bone C-) NEUROLOGICAL TERMINOLOGY MICROCEPHALY • Malformation characterized by very small head, often accompanied by a mental retardation MYASTHENIA • Striated muscle weakness • Neuromuscular junction disease marked by the formation of abnormal antibodies against acetylcholine receptors necessary for contraction of striated muscles MYOTONIA • Absence or disappearance of muscle tonicity MYATROPHY • Underdeveloped muscles, muscle atrophy MYELINE • White, lipid structured sheath of nerve fibers that enter the composition of the nerves of the cerebrospinal system MYELINATION • Formation of myelin sheath around the nerve fiber MYELITE • Inflammation of the bone marrow or spinal cord MYOTONIA • Muscle tone disorder characterized by slowness and difficulty in decontraction (passive movements are free) during voluntary movements MYOPATHY • The name given to degenerative diseases of the muscular system. MONOSPASM • Spasm on one side or one arm or leg MONOPLEGIA • Localized paralysis that occurs in only one organ or one muscle group NOCICEPTOR • Sensitive receptor receiving pain stimuli NOCICEPTIVE • Receiving pain stimuli; capable of perceiving or transmitting pain NEURAL • Relating to the nervous system NEURALGIA • Pain along the course of a nerve for any reason NEUROATOMY • Anatomy sub-branch that includes peripheral and central nerves NEUROMYOPATHY • The name given to the combined disorders of the muscle and the nerve that innervates it NEUROMYOTONIA • Symptoms such as muscle fasciculations, stiffness, difficulty in relaxation, etc. due to innervating nerve disorder NEUROMUSCULAR • Relating to nerves and muscles NEURON • Neural cell • Morphological and functional basic structure of nervous tissue consisting of cellular bodies and their extensions NEURONAL • Of or relating to a nerve cell NEUROPATHY • The name given to diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system NEUROSPASM • Spasm due to motor nerve disorder innervating striated muscles NEUROSURGERY • The branch of surgery that deals with the nervous system NEUROTENDINEUS • Relating to nerves and tendons OCULOMOTOR • Relating to eyeball movements D-) CARDIOVASCULAR AND PULMONARY TERMINOLOGY LYMPHATIC • Relating to lymph • Lymphatic vessel LYMPHODEMA • Edema due to obstruction of lymphatic pathways MYOCARD • Heart muscle.
