Terminology& Classifications of Fixed Prosthodontics part 2 By Dr. Enas Fathelbab Professor of Fixed Prosthodontics (Bridge) ▪ It is a masticating or incisive surface made of metallic and / or non-metallic material spanning an edentulous space in the dental arch firmly anchored at one or both ends to the adjoining teeth ,roots or implants. Bridge = Fixed Partial Denture Fixed Bridge Fixed Prosthesis Fixed appliance Steps of Bridge Construction Bridge Components Connectors 4 Retainers 3 Pontic/ s 2 1 Abutments 8 1- Abutment It is a natural tooth or root or an implant which supports and retains the bridge at one or both terminals. Pier abutment Intermediate abutment tooth ▪ It is an isolated abutment tooth where anterior and posterior adjacent teeth to it are missing. ▪ i.e. it is located between two edentulous spaces 2- Retainer ▪ It is the part of the bridge (restoration) that rebuilds the prepared abutment and anchors the pontic to it. Retainers 3- Pontic (Dummy) ▪ It is the part of the bridge that represents actual substitute for the missing tooth and is suspended between the retainers replacing the missing natural tooth functionally and esthetically. 4- Connector ▪ It is the part of the bridge that connects the pontic(s) to the retainer(s). ▪ i.e. joins the components of the bridge. Connectors Connectors Type Rigid Non-rigid ▪Precission attachment ▪Cast. ▪Non Precission as: ▪Soldered (Occlusal, Lingual & Sub- ▪Welded occlusal rest) Bridge Classifications Retention Position No. of Material Teeth Bridge I. Retention Compound Simple bridges Fixed- Spring Fixed- Fixed Fixed- Free Supported Cantilever 27 Fixed-Fixed Bridge ▪ It is a bridge where retainers and pontics are all soldered together and is cemented at both ends of the abutment teeth. Fixed- Supported Bridge ▪ It is a bridge where one of its retainers is fixed to its abutment whereas the other is not actually joined to its abutment, BUT is connected to it by means of a non-rigid connector to allow some movement of it. Fixed- Free Bridge (Cantilever ) ▪ It is a bridge where the pontic is fixed to and derives its support from one or double retainers at one end only while the other end is unsupported. Spring Cantilever Bridge ▪ It is a cantilever bridge where the pontic is at the end of slightly curved resilient arm deriving its support from an abutment remote from the edentulous space. Compound Bridge ▪ It is composed of two simple bridge types. Compound Bridge III. Position CANIN E Anterior Complex Posterior Unilateral MIDLINE Bilateral Anterior bridge (Uni-lateral FPD) (Bi-lateral FPD) IV. Material Metal Combination Non-Metal Ceramic Acrylic OTHERS Immediate Bridge ▪ It is a bridge with root extension pontic and is constructed before extraction of the tooth and seated in position immediately after the extraction at the same visit. Immediate Bridge Removable Bridge ▪ It is a bridge where each retainer consists of two parts, one part is fixed to the abutment tooth, and the other one is soldered to the pontic, and the bridge can be removed at the will of the patient for cleaning purpose. Removable bridge Inner crowns Outer crowns (Cylindrical) Telescopic Crowns as macro-attachments Parallel walls provide friction fit between inner and outer crowns Temporary (Provisional ) Bridge ▪ It is a bridge made and used temporarily for the protection of the prepared teeth, tissue control and maintenance of the space till completion and cementation of the bridge. Resin Bonded Bridge RBR (Adhesive , Maryland ) ▪ It consists of one or two pontics supported by thin metal or ceramic retainers ( wings )placed lingually and proximally on the abutment teeth. ▪ It relies on adhesive bonding between etched enamel and the metal or ceramic retainers.
