Explorer Motivation, Accomplishment Henry Hudson Sought a faster trade route to Asia, but ended up in modern day New York, which would eventually become a Dutch Colony called “New Amsterdam.” John Cabot Sought new trade and land, discovering “Newfoundland” in present-day Canada. He made the first land claims for England in the New World. Hernan Cortes Sought gold and spices in the New World. Ended up in modern-day Mexico, where he conquered the Aztec civilization and claimed land for Spain (Note: He also found tons of gold) Juan Ponce de Leon (the Lion) Sailed with Columbus, and sought similar fame and fortune. He settled modern-day Puerto Rico, claiming it for Spain and becoming its first governor. He eventually “discovered” Florida (meaning “Flower”) before being killed by Native Americans. Amerigo Vespucci Sought discovery, and motivated by Columbus, Vespucci sailed along the Eastern Coast of North and South America, writing detailed journals and mapping the land.
