DR. Amany Abdelfattah Genito-urinary system It is formed of 2 systems: 1. Urinary system 2. Genital system Urinary system It is formed of: 1. Kidney 2. Ureter 3. Urinary bladder 4. Urethra Kidney The organ responsible for blood filtration and urine formation. Structure: I. Stroma: capsule. II. Parenchyma: Nephron → Formed of Renal corpuscle, Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), Loop of Henle, Distal convoluted tubule (DCT). 1. Renal corpuscle: formed of: ✓ Bowman’s capsule → cup-shaped capsule lined by simple squamous epithelium. ✓ Glomerulus → tuft of capillaries. 2. PCT & DCT: lined by simple cubical epithelium 3. Loop of Henle: ✓ Thick part lined by simple cubical epithelium. ✓ Thin part lined by simple squamous epithelium. DR. Amany Abdelfattah Male genital system Formed of: 1. Primary sex organ: Testis. 2. Accessory sex organs: Excretory tubules of the testis. Glands: Seminal vesicle, prostate. Penis. Prostate gland ❖ Male accessory gland that is pierced by the urethra. ❖ Structure: stroma and parenchyma 1. Stroma: capsule, trabeculae. 2. Parenchyma: formed of prostatic acini: a. Mucosal acini: the smallest type, lie in periurethral tissue. b. Submucosal acini: larger and outer to mucosal acini. c. Main acini: the largest and the most peripheral acini. ❖ Function: produce a secretion that nourishes the sperm DR. Amany Abdelfattah Female genital system Formed of: 1. Primary sex organ: ovary. 2. Accessory sex organs: - Fallopian tubes. - Uterus - Vagina - External genitalia. The uterus ❖ Formed of 3 parts 1) Fundus. 2) Body. 3) Cervix. The wall of uterus is formed of 3 layers: A. Endometrium. Histologically: 2 layers: ✓ Epithelium → Simple columnar ciliated epithelium. ✓ Lamina propria → contain endometrial glands Functionally: two zones: ✓ Superficial functioning zone: shed off during menstruation. ✓ Deep (basal) zones: regenerates endometrium. B. Myometrium. - 3 layers of smooth muscles (inner, middle & outer layers). - The middle layer smooth muscle fibers give “8-shaped figures”. C. Perimetrium (serosa) → Loose C.T.
