Study Notes
Genito-Urinary System
- Composed of two systems: Urinary and Genital
- Urinary System
- Composed of: Kidney, Ureter, Urinary Bladder, Urethra
- Kidney
- Responsible for blood filtration and urine formation
- Structure
- Stroma: Capsule
- Parenchyma: Nephron
- Formed of: Renal corpuscle, Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), Loop of Henle, Distal convoluted tubule (DCT)
- Renal Corpuscle:
- Bowman's capsule: Cup-shaped capsule, lined by simple squamous epithelium
- Glomerulus: Tuft of capillaries
- PCT & DCT: Lined by simple cubical epithelium
- Loop of Henle:
- Thick part: Lined by simple cubical epithelium
- Thin part: Lined by simple squamous epithelium
- Renal Corpuscle:
- Formed of: Renal corpuscle, Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), Loop of Henle, Distal convoluted tubule (DCT)
Male Genital System
- Formed of: Primary sex organs (Testis), Accessory sex organs (Excretory tubules of the testis, Glands: Seminal vesicle, Prostate, Penis)
- Prostate Gland
- Male accessory gland, pierced by the urethra
- Structure:
- Stroma: Capsule, trabeculae
- Parenchyma: Formed of prostatic acini
- Mucosal acini: Smallest type, in periurethral tissue
- Submucosal acini: Larger, outer to mucosal acini
- Main acini: Largest, most peripheral
- Function: Produces secretion that nourishes sperm
Female Genital System
- Formed of: Primary sex organ (Ovary), Accessory sex organs (Fallopian tubes, Vagina)
- Uterus
- Formed of 3 parts: Fundus, Body, Cervix
- Wall of Uterus: 3 Layers
- A. Endometrium:
- Histologically: Simple columnar ciliated epithelium, Lamina propria, endometrial glands
- Functionally: Two zones
- Superficial: Shed during menstruation
- Deep (basal): Regenerates endometrium
- B. Myometrium: 3 layers of smooth muscle (inner, middle, outer)
- C. Perimetrium (serosa): Loose connective tissue
- A. Endometrium:
