# Southeast ## Regions: Southeast ### Answer Key *Students should have colored this region. ### Research Notes Page One **States in the Region** List the states and abbreviations located in this region. Match the numbers on the map. 1. Arkansas (AR) 2. Louisiana (LA) 3. Mississippi (MS) 4. Alabama (AL) 5. Florida (FL) 6. Georgia (GA) 7. South Carolina (SC) 8. North Carolina (NC) 9. Tennessee (TN) 10. Kentucky (KY) 11. Virginia (VA) 12. West Virginia (WV) ## Research Notes Page Two **Climate and Geography** Record the average yearly precipitation for this region. Identify the highest point in the region. Describe the climate and seasons. - **Average Yearly Precipitation (rain and snow)** - 50 inches - **Climate** - Usually warm with lots of sunshine. - Temperatures in the summer are often in the 90s with high humidity. - Winters are generally mild. - In the southern areas of Florida, the climate is tropical, with little to no freezing temperatures in the winter months. - Northern states sometimes get light snow during the winter. - Hurricanes can happen between June and November. - States along the Atlantic Ocean have storms called Nor'easters, especially in the fall and winter months. - **Highest Point** - Mount Mitchell - 6,684 feet - North Carolina - **Geographical Features** - Includes lowlands, mountains, harbors, and wetlands - Atlantic Coastal Plain with lowlands and harbors - Appalachian Mountains and other smaller mountain ranges such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains - Swamps, wetlands, and marshes are also part of the geography of the Southeast region - Deltas are a key feature of southern Louisiana - these are wetlands where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico - Outer Banks of North Carolina have barrier islands ## Research Notes Page Three **Natural Resources** Identify the natural resources in this region. Classify the resources as renewable or nonrenewable. | **Renewable** | **Nonrenewable** | |---|---| | Water* | Coal | | Timber (pine trees) | Phosphate | | Soil | Bauxite Ore | | Citrus Fruit | Petroleum | | Rice | Water* | | Cotton | | | Seafood | | *Water can be classified as both renewable (due to the water cycle) and nonrenewable (pollution and/or drought conditions) ## Research Notes Page Four **Economy** How do the people living in this region earn money?
