SOCS1A - Readings in Philippine History the ability to assess and initiate things independently the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do the fact or quality of being on time the fact of arriving, doing something, or happening at the expected or correct time and not late. SOCS1A - Readings in Philippine History SITE OF THE RETRACTION FIRST MASS OF RIZAL CRY OF CAVITE BALINTAWAK MUTINY OR PUGADLAWIN Historical issues are important part of the discourse on history. It only makes the field of history challenging and exciting. It also proves that history is alive and dynamic. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (formerly National Historical Institute) is a government cultural agency mandated to IDENTIFY, DECLARE, and COMMEMORATE significant historical events that shaped our nation among its many functions. Is it in BUTUAN or in LIMASAWA? CARLOS “BOTONG” FRANCISCO - “FIRST MASS AT LIMASAWA NHCP already made its official decision in favor of Limasawa as the site of the First Mass. But history is a dynamic field; it is also possible that this decision will be challenged if there would be NEW EVIDENCES supporting a different place of the first mass in the country. UP Dilaman - April 16, 2021 Dr. Antonio Sanchez de Mora The first ever Easter Mass in the Philippines – a landmark in the history of Philippine Christianity – was held in 1521 on the island of Mazaua, known today as Limasawa Island, Leyte. The 1872 CAVITE MUTINY What happen during the Cavite Mutiny? The Cavite Mutiny of 1872 is believed to be one of the major local events in the province of Cavite which resonated throughout colonial Philippines. A major factor in the awakening of NATIONALISM among the Filipinos of that time. RIZAL’S RETRACTION What is the retraction all about? What are the two versions existing regarding the said issue? Based on the readings, which version do you believe? Why? The retraction issue of Jose Rizal is one of the most talked about and controversial issues about the hero which never ceased to attract the attention of scholars, both local and foreign. Faith and religion are the main issues in the retraction controversy haunting Jose Rizal even beyond the grave and after more than a century after his execution. CRY OF BALINTAWAK OR PUGADLAWIN What are the conflicting issues regarding the two locations of this historical event? Enumerate them. What are the official stand of the NHCP regarding the said issue? Using primary and secondary sources, four places have been identified: Balintawak, Kangkong, Pugad Lawin, and Bahay Toro, while the dates vary: 23, 24, 25, or 26 August 1896. Valenzuela's account should be read with caution: He once told a Spanish investigator that the "Cry" happened in Balintawak on Wednesday, 26 August 1896. Much later, he wrote in his Memoirs of the Revolution that it happened at Pugad Lawin on 23 August 1896. Such INCONSISTENCIES in accounts should always be seen as a red flag when dealing with primary sources According to Guerrero, Encarnacion, and Villegas, all these places are in Balintawak, then part of Caloocan, now, in Quezon City. As for the dates, Bonifacio and his troops may have been moving from one place to another to avoid being located by the Spanish government, which could explain why there are several accounts of the Cry. Historical writings are products of individuals with certain specific agenda/motive. The narrative of the events/historical data are given interpretations and meanings based on one's judgment. 1/2 Crosswise Look for the conflict/controversy of the poem “Sa Aking Mga Kabata” Author/writer What was the poem all about?
