The Declaration of Independence, which was written in Spanish, was read by its author, Ambrosio Rianzares-Bautista. The document had 98 signatories including Emilio Aguinaldo and an American official named Coronel L. M. Johnson. This historic event was very significant to the Filipinos as a nation, for it proved to the whole Emilio Aguinaldo’s Mansion world that the Philippines could be a free country. Photo from National Historical Commission of the Philippines During this significant event, the national flag of the Philippines was raised for the first time. The flag, crafted in Hong Kong, was designed and sewn by Marcella Agoncillo, alongside Lorenza Agoncillo and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad. It was also the premiere of the national anthem, with the Banda Matanda of San Francisco de Malabon performing the rendition entitled "Marcha Nacional Filipina." Julian Felipe composed the music of the national anthem at the request of Emilio Aguinaldo. Initially named "Marcha Filipina Julian Felipe Photo from Wikipedia Magdalo," it was later renamed "Marcha Nacional Filipina." For an entire year, the Philippine national anthem had no lyrics. In 1899, a soldier named Jose Palma penned a Spanish poem titled "Filipinas." Jose Palma started crafting verses while attending Ateneo de Manila University and later joined the revolution during the Philippine-American War in 1899. Originally meant for publication only, the poem's profound message led to it being chosen as the lyrics for the Philippine national anthem. The original lyrics of the Philippine national anthem were initially in Spanish, then translated into English, and later sung in Filipino from 1956 onwards. A slight revision was made in the 1960 before they were officially adopted. On February 12, 1998, Republic Act Jose Palma No. 8491 was passed, codifying these lyrics into law. https://www.facebook.com/Lahi.PH According to RA 8491, known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, the national anthem must follow the musical arrangement and composition by Felipe. It is mandatory for the audience to sing the national anthem during public events like official gatherings, significant occasions, flag ceremonies in educational institutions or workplaces, broadcast station sign-ons and sign-offs, and before the final film showing. Respect must be shown when the anthem is performed or played. 1. Describe the declaration of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898.
