Background The Philippines was under the colony of the Spaniards for 333 years. This years of oppression led the Filipinos to fight for freedom. When at last, freedom was attained in 1898, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, appointed Julian Felipe to compose a march music for the revolutionists because he felt the need for national symbols. This music was originally titled "Marcha Filipina Magdalo" and was later renamed "Marcha Nacional Filipina". This is the tune of the "Lupang Hinirang" that we know today but without lyrics yet with. The anthem remained without lyrics for almost one year until the poet-soldier Jose Palma wrote the Spanish poem "Filipinas". Why do you think José Palma wrote the poetry in Spanish instead of Filipino? If you were José Palma, will you also write the lyrics in Spanish? To fully capture and express the ardent patriotism of the Filipinos, the poem was translated to Filipino by Felipe de Leon in the early 1900\'s. And today, the anthem is sung in Filipino.
