The English Learning Kit is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Division of Iloilo Secondary English Teachers Association (DISETA) and the Division English Coordinators Association (DECA) writers, illustrators, layout artists, reviewers, editors, and Quality Assurance Team from the Department of Education, Schools Division of Iloilo. It requires the learners to develop ability to communicate with others, to give and to exchange information and ideas - such as asking questions, giving directions, coordinating with tasks, explaining and persuading. It is then important that one must be careful and mindful when communicating with others in order to express one’s feelings and ideas successfully and avoid errors in discourse. As a learner, one should enhance his communication skills and share these with others. With this gift, an individual could become the best that he could possibly be. One’s ability to talk and to use the oral language allows him to succeed in the academic and business world while embracing the 21st Century virtual reality. Communication is a process of sharing messages or information between the speaker and receiver using channels, contexts, media, and cultures. It could be done using the verbal and non-verbal cues. Verbal communication can be written or spoken. It uses language, a symbol consisting of drawings, letters and words. Non-verbal communication consists of physical behavior commonly referred to as body language, use of gestures, space and voice. Communication can be seen in different situations such as a face-to-face interaction, a phone call conversation, a varied group discussion, an interview, a class discussion and recitation, and many others. Elements of Communication Communication is divided into elements which help us better understand its mechanics or process. These elements are the following: 1. Speaker – the source of information or message. 2. Message – the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker in words or in actions. 3. Encoding – the process of converting the message into words, actions, or other forms that the speaker understands. 4. Channel – the medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbal or nonverbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed. Decoding – the process of interpreting the encoded message of the speaker by the receiver. 6. Receiver – the recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the message. 7. Barrier – the factors that affect the flow of communication. Nature of Communication 1. Communication is a process that unfolds over time and creates our social world. 2. Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver). 3. Communication can be expressed through words (verbal), action (nonverbal), or both at the same time. Process of Communication 1. The speaker generates an idea. 2. The speaker encodes an idea or converts the idea into words or actions. 3. The speaker transmits or sends out a message. 4. The receiver gets the message. 5. The receiver decodes or interprets the message based on the context. 6. The receiver sends or provides feedback. Functions of Communication Basically, there are five functions of communication. These are control, social interaction, motivation, emotional expression, and information dissemination. 1. Motivation – Communication motivates or encourages people to live better. 4. Emotional expression – Communication facilitates people’s expression of their feelings and emotions. 5.
