EXPLORE E You had learned in the previous quarter about the importance of communication in your daily activities. This time, you will know how to manage yourself in different situations using different communicative strategies. In this module, you will learn how to start or participate in a healthy conversation with other people using different communicative strategies. So, let’s check your readiness by answering some questions in your activity notebook. 1. In communicating on different situations, what should be observed? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 2. Support your answer. ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 2 Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Employs various communicative strategies in different situations (CS_EN11/12OC-Ilab-21) KEEP THIS IN MIND Great! You answered each question well. It shows that you are now ready to know the different communicative strategies. Now, I will present to you how can these strategies be applied in different situations. To achieve a sustainable and fruitful conversation, you may use the following communicative strategies1: 1. Nomination This strategy is used to open a conversation. A speaker carries out nomination to establish a topic with the person whom he/she is talking to. For example, your neighbor greeted you and opened up a topic about the latest news in your town. She may say, “Hi Carmen! Have you heard the latest news about a confirmed case of COVID-19 here in our town? 2. Restriction This pertains to any limitation you may use as a speaker. As a speaker, you may discuss only what is related to the topic. Example of this is during a meeting or class discussion. You may focus only with the agenda or the topic of the lesson. If a learner would ask a question which is out of the topic, you may say, “I’m sorry but your question is not a part of the lesson. Please reserve that for the next topic. We are out of time for that discussion.” 3. Turn-Taking Turn-taking refers to the process in which people decide who take the conversational floor. The primary goal of this is to give everyone a chance to speak. You need to keep your words relevant and reasonably short. You also have to be polite always in taking the floor from another speaker. You may use visual signals like a nod, a look, or a step back which may be accompanied by spoken cues like, “Do you want to say something?” Example: Yes, you are raising your hand. Do you want to say something? 1Sipacio, P.J. and Balgos, A. R. (2016). Oral Communication in Context for Senior High School. C & E Publishing, Inc. Philippines 3 Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Employs various communicative strategies in different situations (CS_EN11/12OC-Ilab-21) 4. Topic Control Topic control covers how procedural or informality affects the development of topic conversation. It is more restricted unlike a casual conversation with a friend in a street wherein you may take the conversational floor anytime. When a topic is initiated, it should be developed by avoiding unnecessary interruptions and topic shift. Example of the situations are during court trial, senate and congress hearing, debate, and etc. In this strategy, you may involve yourself in conversation without dominating the conversation by using minimal responses like “Yes,” “Okay,” “Go on,” and asking tag questions like, “You are excited, aren’t you?” 5. Topic Shifting As the name suggests, it involves moving from one topic to another. In short, it is where one part of the conversation ends and another begins. You may also use effective conversational transitions to indicate a shift like, By the way,” “In addition to what you have said,” “Which remind me of” and the like. Example: “You have mentioned living organisms. Do you know that planet Venus has living organisms discovered by the scientists lately” 6. Repair This pertains on how the speaker addresses the problems in speaking, listening, and comprehending in a conversation. For example: If everyone talks at the same time, there must be somebody to set the conversation back to its topic. And if there is a problem in the conversation, the speaker will always address and correct it. Example: “Everyone please calm down. I think we need to give chance for everyone to speak. Can we do that?” 7. Termination Termination refers to close-initiating of the participants in the conversation. The topic initiator takes responsibility to signal the end of the discussion. The speaker may say “Good bye.”, “Thank you” and the like. Example: “It’s really nice conversing with you but I think it’s already late. See you next time, bye!” 4 Grade 11 – Oral Communication Competency: Employs various communicative strategies in different situations (CS_EN11/12OC-Ilab-21) APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED Activity 1.
