The name "DanceSport" was invented to help competitive Ballroom Dancing gain Olympic recognition. The physical demand of DanceSport has been the subject of scientific research. Right Hand to Left Hand Hold Exact Opposite to above. This hold is seldom used. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Right Hand to Right Hand Hold The Right of the Lady is held in the Right Hand of the Man. The hold may vary depending on figure being danced. Left Hand to Left Hand Hold Exact Opposite to above. This hold is seldom used. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Both Hand Hold A combination of Left Hand to Right Hand Hold and Right Hand to Left Hand Hold. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Normal Hold - 3 points of contact 1) Right Hand of Lady is held in the Left Hand of Man. Elbows of both should be held at or below level of shoulders Hands should meet at center between the two bodies at elbow width. Palms of hands are together Lady’s fingers closed over the V between Man’s left thumb and index finger. Man’s fingers are closed over the back of Lady’s hand. Man’s and Lady’s Thumbs are together. 2) Right Hand of Man is cupped around the lower part of the Lady’s left shoulder blade. 3) Lady’s left arm is in contact with right arm of Man from elbow to shoulder & her hand is placed around the back of the Man’s shoulder. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Promenade Hold Similar to Normal Hold, with the following differences: Left Hand of Man and Right Hand of Lady are held at the same height as shoulder and elbow. Right Hand of Man and Left Hand of Lady slip to center of the partner’s back according to position of the bodies. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Promenade Hold Hands are rotated: ⮚ Lady’s hand is held between thumb and middle finger of Man. Middle finger of man is highest point of hand hold. ⮚ Lady’s thumb is crossed over the outside of Man’s thumb and is lowest point of the hand hold. ⮚ Palms face outwards and are not in contact. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Counter Promenade Hold Similar to Normal Hold, with the following differences: Left Hand of Man and Right Hand of Lady are raised vertically above Head height. Right Hand of Man and Left Hand of Lady slip to the Upper arm of the partner according to the Position of the bodies. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Shadow Hold Man’s Left Hand to Lady’s Left Wrist.  Finger’s of Man on top of Lady’s wrist and thumb underneath.  Lady’s Right arm is held nearly straight at shoulder level. Man’s Right Hand in contact with:  Lady’s Right Shoulder.  Lady’s Right hip.  Lady’s Right Side (waist level). INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 LATIN HAND HOLD Shadow Hold (Continued) Alternative option: Man’s Left Hand to Lady’s Right Hand. Lady’s Left Hand across body (Man’s arm passes behind the Lady). INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Hip Design – Anteversion & Retroversion Anteversion Curve of lumbar region (lower spine) is exaggerated, and the Kyphosis of dorsal region (upper spine) is neutralized. During this motion the abdominal muscles should be stretched. Retroversion Kyphosis of dorsal region (upper spine) is exaggerated, and the lordosis of lumbar region (base of spine above buttocks) is neutralized. During this motion the abdominal muscles should be contracted. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Hip Design – Translation, Inclination & Rotation Translation Examples of right & left translation. Hips are moved laterally in relation to the shoulder line. Inclination One hip is lowered in relation to the other. Can be achieved by transferring the body weight onto one leg and bending the opposite knee. Rotation Hips are rotated under the shoulders creating torsion in the torso. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 EXAMPLE : INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 EXAMPLE : INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 EXAMPLE : CBMP (Contrary Body Movement Position) An indication of foot placement. Moving foot is placed on or across the line of the other foot when moving forwards or backwards A result of the slight rotation prior to taking the step. Used on outside partner positions to maintain togetherness of couple. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Standard Couple Positions & Posture Closed Position The basic position. Right side of the Lady’s center is in contact with the right side of the Man’s Center. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Standard Couple Positions & Posture Outside Partner Position Similar to Closed Position. Used when the forward- moving partner has to step Outside with the Right Foot. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Standard Couple Positions & Posture Promenade Position Points of contact are Right side of the Man with Left side of the Lady, creating a V-Shape. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Standard Couple Positions & Posture Fallaway Position Used when both partners move backwards in same direction (towards closing of V). Points of contact are Right side of Man and Left Side of Lady. INTRODUCTION TO DANCESPORT SESSION 1 Standard Couple Positions & Posture Counter Promenade Position Used when both partners move forwards in the same direction (towards opening of V). Positions of Contact are Left side of Man and Right side of Lady.
