Mother Goose Special School System, Inc. Sentence And Its Parts Grade 4 A sentence is a group of words that has a complete thought, and by itself tells, asks, commands, or expresses a strong feeling. In a sentence, the beginning letter of the first word is always capitalized. Each sentence ends with a punctuation mark like a period, question mark, or exclamation point. To decide whether a group of words is a sentence or not, ask these questions: 1. Do the words contain a subject and a predicate? 2. Do the words make sense by themselves? 3. Do you naturally make a pause after the words when you read them? A sentence has two parts, namely, the subject and the predicate. The simple subject of a sentence tells what is talked about. It may be a noun or pronoun. Example: Jesus grew in age and wisdom. The simple predicate of a sentence tells what the subject is or does. It is always a verb. Example: Jesus grew in age and wisdom. The complete subject is the part of a sentence that contains the simple subject and all the words that go with it. Example: The people wondered about what they saw. The complete predicate contains the simple predicate and all the words that go with it. Example: The people wondered about what they saw. A sentence that is missing either its subject or its main verb is a sentence fragment. It does not express a complete thought. Examples: Make a good living. Went to the store yesterday. Many of the animals.
