Psychology Sensations and Perceptions Sensations and Perceptions 1. Sensation - The process of sensing our environment through touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell. 2. Perception - The process of organizing and interpreting sensory information to understand the environment. 3. Absolute Threshold - The minimum level of stimulus intensity needed for a stimulus to be detected 50% of the time. 4. Sensory Adaptation - The process by which sensory receptors become less sensitive to constant stimuli over time. Vision 5. Rods - Photoreceptor cells in the retina responsible for vision in low light conditions. 6. Cones - Photoreceptor cells in the retina responsible for color vision and detail in bright light. Hearing 7. Sound - Vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's ear. 8. Pitch - The perceived frequency of a sound, determining how high or low it sounds. 9. Loudness - The perception of the intensity or amplitude of a sound. The Endocrine System - A network of glands that produce and release hormones to regulate various body functions. 1. Hormones - Chemical messengers produced by glands that regulate bodily functions and processes. 2. Glands - Organs in the body that secrete hormones. 3. Endocrine system - The system of glands that release hormones into the bloodstream to regulate the body. 4. Pituitary gland - A small gland at the base of the brain that controls growth and regulates other glands. 5. Growth hormone - A hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates growth and cell reproduction. 6. Thyroid gland - A gland in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism and energy. 7. Metabolism - The chemical processes in the body that convert food into energy. 8. Adrenal glands - Glands located above the kidneys that produce hormones like adrenaline. 9. Adrenaline - A hormone released by the adrenal glands that increases heart rate and energy in response to stress. 10. Gonads - The sex glands (ovaries in females, testes in males) that produce hormones and reproductive cells. 11. Androgen - A group of hormones, including testosterone, that regulate male traits and reproductive activity. 12. Estrogen - A group of hormones that regulate female reproductive functions and secondary sexual characteristics.
