They have various structures to help them multiply. Look at the pictures of the different plants below. 1. They use other means of propagation. Vascular plants or plants that have a transport system for water and food include seedless plants like ferns which produce spores. These can develop into a new plant exactly like the plant that produced it. Spores have tough outer covering. It protects them from drying out until they find the right conditions for growth. Another vascular plant is called a gymnosperm. It is a seed plant that does not produce a flower. Gymnosperms like pine trees, cycads and ginkgos have hard seeds that are uncovered. Nonvascular plants are small and survive without a transport system. Mosses, hornworts and liverworts for example, reach heights of a centimeter or less. Their parts are very close to the ground to absorb water directly. They also produce spores. Moss growing on rocks. INTEGRATE Visit your home or community garden. Take note of at least three non-flowering plants. Describe how they reproduce. ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ SCIEnce 5 Page 2 of 3 DIVISION OF GEN.
