HEART – muscular organ approximately the size of your fist located in the chest cavity between the lungs. -Pumps blood through the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions. This fist-sized powerhouse beats (expands and contracts) 100,000 times per day, pumping five or six quarts of blood each minute, or about 2,000 gallons per day. *Pericardium – protective sac of the heart *Dr. William Harvey - English physician who was the first to recognize the full circulation of the blood in the human body. Chambers of the heart The upper chamber is called an atrium (or auricle), and the lower chamber is called a ventricle. The two atria act as receiving chambers for blood entering the heart; and ventricles pump the blood out of the heart. The septum of the heart is the dividing wall between the right and left sides of the heart. MGSSSI : School Year 2024-2025 Mother Goose Special School System, Inc. 2. BLOOD VESSELS >Artery – carries blood away from the heart >Vein – carries blood towards the heart >Capillaries – twig like structures that connect veins and arteries together. >Superior Vena cava – carries blood coming from the upper extremities >Inferior Vena cava- carries blood coming from the lower extremities to the right auricle >Aorta – largest artery >Venules- smallest veins 3. BLOOD -a tissue with red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and other substances suspended in fluid called plasma. Blood takes oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, and carries away wastes. Different components that make up blood a.) Red Blood Cell/ Erythrocyte- carries oxygen b.) White Blood Cell/ Leukocyte – fights germs and protects the body c.) Blood Platelets – helps the blood to clot d.) Hemoglobin – makes the blood color red e.) Plasma – liquid part of the blood *Valves – allow the blood to move in the proper direction MGSSSI : School Year 2024-2025
