India, alsdekived from the River Indus, the valleys around whichusere the home of the early settlers. The Aryan worshippers referred to the river Indus as the Sindhu. The name Bharat mainly derived from the name of the Vedic community of Bharatas who are mentioned in the Rigveda as one of the principal kingdoms of the Aryavarta. India is the largest democracy in the world, the 7th largest country in the world, and one of the most ancient civilizations. Location: India lies to the north of the Equator, and in the centre of the Eastern Hemisphere. India's mainland extends between latitudes 8" 4' and 37° 6' North, and longitudes 68° 7' and 97" 25' East. The Tropic of Cancer passes through India Physical Setting: India has a land frontier of 15,200 kms and a coastline of over 6,000 kms. She has the towering mountain ranges of the Himalayas in the north. South of them lie the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The Thar Desert is located to the west, while the Deccan Plateau of peninsular India, is in the south, with fertile coastal strips on either side. Indian Flag- The National flag of India is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of width of the flag to its length is two to three. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra. Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Its diameter approximates to the width of the white band, and it has 24 spokes.
