# Reading and Writing ## Objective 1. identify the unique features of a Literature Review and its requirements that are useful across disciplines 2. write a simple yet comprehensive literature review. ## Review Time 1. How to start writing a book review? ## What's New List down the sources that you used in your Grade 10 Science Investigatory Project or any research in English. Separate the sources taken from databases, websites, or textbooks. ## Literature Review ## What is Literature Review? A literature review is a type of academic writing that provides an overview of a specific topic. It surveys scholarly work such as academic books (but not textbooks), computerize databases, conference proceedings, dissertation’s/theses, empirical studies government reports, historical records, journal article, monographs, and statistical handbooks. ## As an advance form of academic writing, a literature review critically analyzes the relationship among the scholarly works and the current work. It can be written as a stand-alone paper or as part of a research paper explaining a theoretical framework and related studies. Unlike an annotated bibliography which presents a summary and synthesis (i.e., linking different sources). ## Below are the differences among the sources. | Annotated Bibliography | Book Review | Literature Review | |---|---|---| | Summarizes the references and explain how important they are in addressing the research questions | Evaluates a book Review | Reviews a significant number of scholarly work in order to identify what is known and not known about a topic | ## Functions of a Literature Review This type of a review has the following roles. - Justifies a research questions, method or theoretical and conceptual framework - Establishes the relevant of the topic - Provides necessary information to better understand a specific topic or study - Shows reviewers familiarity and mastery of the topic - Establishes a niche of the study - Resolves conflict among contradictory studies ## Literature reviews consist of the following components and purposes: ## Introduction - defines the topic and the scope being considered - notes intentional exclusions - states the general findings of the review and the availability of the sources ## Main Body - Organizes the evaluation of the sources whether chronologically or thematically - showcases the critical summary and evaluation of the research premise, methodology, and conclusion - uses grammatical connectors, relational words or phrases, and transitional devices ## Conclusion - summarizes the key findings of the review - offers the reviewer's justification of the conducted research ## References - reflects the in-text citations - contains complete and correct citations ## Here are four literature review strategies: | | | |---|---| | Summary | State briefly the argument and main points of relevant research. | | Analysis | Examine closely the elements or structure of the research. | | Synthesis | Combine ideas to form an integrated theory or system through critical evaluation, compare/contrast, etc. | | Evaluation | Assess the research based on the criteria or rubric that you choose, state, and explain. (3-0 points) <br> The findings of articles were mentioned with little and or no comparison or connection to each other. (3-0 points) <br> The conclusion of the review did not summarize the knowledge found from this review. (0 point) <br> The references were not listed. (0 point) | | Organization | The review was organized using subheadings. The review was suitably organized considering the contents of the selected articles. (2 points) <br> There were no grammatical, spelling and/or punctuation errors and transitional phrases were used to guide the reader throughout the text.
