THE PHILIPPINE SOCIAL WORK VALUES KAPWA- the shared identity is the nexus of all the core Filipino values The SW Code of Ethics underscores the interface of the Filipino with the social work profession’s core values in reinforcing a contextual, competent and ethical social work practice. The values permeate in the everyday life of the Filipino, including but not limited to, identity, traits, behaviors, and aspirations, to guide the social work practice as expressed in the following: PAKIRAMDAM- Pivotal Interpersonal Value or shared inner perception KAGANDAHANG LOOB- Linking socio personal value or shared humanity UTANG NA LOOB- Accommodative surface values of hiya or shame or norm of reciprocity, and pakikisama and pakikipagkapwa or smooth internal/interpersonal relationship (SIR) BAHALA NA- Confrontative surface values of bahala na reflective of self-determination and willfulness LAKAS NG LOOOB- Courage PAKIKIBAKA- collective struggle for a social and political cause PADAYON- moving forward and sense of determination and will power KARANGALAN, KATARUNGAN, KALAYAAN- Societal values of dignity, justice, or freedom BAYANIHAN- pagtutulungan ETHICAL SOCIAL WORK practice must connect the social work core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, professional integrity, competence, and importance of human relationships with that of the core Filipino values. a. SERVICE (KAWANGGAWA)- Collective and purposeful provision of social service b. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS- Propelled by the Filipino societal values of kalayaan (freedom), katarungan (justice and equality) and right to self-determination, participation inclusive but not limited to Gender, vulnerable groups, indigenous groups. c. DIGNITY AND WORTH OF THE PERSON- Reinforced by distinct ways of showing respect also kapwa or shared identity or inner self, humaneness at the highest level, a unique moral obligation to treat one another as equal fellow human beings d. DIMENSIONS OF SPIRITUALITY- Lived human experiences with an inner sense of meaning and gratitude and affiliation with an organized practice of faith/religion; e. PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY- Dangal / karangalan, honor, and dignity, self- awareness and objectivity propelled by pakiramdam or shared inner perception f. CULTURAL COMPETENCE (KAKAYAHAN SA KULTURA/PANGKULTURANG KAKAYAHAN)- ability of the person to understand, sensitivity, awareness and responsiveness to diversity of culture; as it refers to work with diversity and inclusion g. IMPORTANCE OF CRITICAL ENGAGEMENT IN HUMAN RELATIONSHIP- propelled by the value of kagandahang loob or shared humanity a genuine act of generosity, kindness and caring characteristic of compassion as an innate component of empathy; bayanihan spirit i. DYNAMISM IN FAMILY AND COMMUNITY LIFE- kung ano ang pinapakita sa pamilya, ganon din dapat sa community h. RESILIENCE (KATATAGAN), PERSEVERANCE, PATIENCE- matatag kahit mayroong problema j. RESPONSIBLE USE OF TECHNOLOGY, DIVERSE DIGITAL FORMS OF ELECTRONIC SERVICES AND ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKS- dapat responsible sa paggamit ng teknolohiya COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONAL SERVICE- commitment to empowering clients’ capacity to help themselves (social workers as agents and advocates of change) DIGNITY AND WORTH OF THE PERSON- (reinforced by respect for Kapwa, shared identity or inner self; humaneness at the highest level; a unique moral obligation to treat one another as equal fellow human being) PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY- conscious use of professional self, dangal, self- awareness RESILIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE- Filipinos as matatag or steadfast and patient SPIRITUALITY OR SENSE OF MEANING- Belief in Supreme Being or however the client defines such belief COMPETENCE- competence-based education, lifelong learning and continuing professional development IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIP- the dynamic interplay of a genuine act of generosity, with a sense of gratitude or utang na loob DYNAMISM IN PERSONAL, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY LIFE- respect privacy and confidentiality, respect for family traditions, rituals, and diverse and evolving family structures, patriotism and involvement in social and political causes USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL MEDIA- responsible use of confidential information for the benefit of the clients MODULE I UNIT 2 GENERALIST SOCIAL WORK: INITIAL RESPONSE OF FILIPINO SOCIAL WORKERS TO THE CALL FOR AN INDIGENOUS SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE AND EDUCATION DEFINITION OF GENERALIST SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE Definition of Generalist Social Work Practice Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2006:page 7) as the application of an eclectic knowledge base, professional values, and a wide range of skills to target systems of any size ELECTIC- pinagsama-samang kaalaman CLIENT EMPOWERMENT-binibigyan ng kakayahan na maresooba ng client yung problema na meron siya GENERALIST SOCIAL WORKERS require information about people who need help GENERAL SYSTEMS THEORY (commonly known as SYSTEMS THEORY): Systems theory provides social works with conceptual perspective that can guide how they view the world. Workers and Clients as Systems TARGET SYSTEM OR TARGET OF CHANGE- the system that social workers need to change or influence to accomplish their goals, targets of change maybe individual clients, families, formal groups, administrators, or policy makers CLIENT SYSTEM- any individual, family, group, organization or community CHANGE AGENT SYSTEM- the individual who initiates the planned change process ACTION SYSTEM- includes all those people who agree and are committed to work together in order to attain the proposed change The Ecological Perspective: The ecological approach assumes a person-in-environment focus. THEORY - a coherent group of principles, concepts, and ideas to explain some observable occurrence or trend METHODS- are the specific techniques and approaches that social workers utilize in their work with clients to accomplish tasks and specific goals Relationship Between a Theory & a Method The concepts of theory and method are both independent & interrelated. A method is actually what a social worker does when working with a client. A theory seeks to predict or describe a particular phenomenon and a method specifies what to do when faced with a particular problem PERSPECTIVE- slightly different from theory as it does not necessarily predict a phenomena but most often describes a framework or a way of viewing and understanding particular situations MODEL- usually a theory or method depicted logically and/or graphically and is concerned with ‘what and how something happens Ecological Concepts -The SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT involves the conditions, circumstances, and human interactions that encompass human beings. - A PERSON-IN-ENVIRONMENT focus sees people as constantly interacting with various systems around them ENERGY is the natural power of active involvement among people INPUT ENERGY- a form of energy coming into a person’s life and adding to that life OUTPUT ENERGY- a form of energy going out of a person’s life or taking something away from it The INTERFACE is the exact point at which the interaction between an individual and the environment takes place ADAPTATION is the capacity to adjust to surrounding environmental conditions, it implies change COPING is a form of human adaptation and implies a struggle to overcome problems INTERDEPENDENCE is the mutual reliance of each person on each other person
