(pages 103 - 105) 1. Trace the expansion of Islam. My Answer: after muhammad’s death, many tribes were united by islam and formed a powerful and skilled army that began expansion of arab muslim rule across three continents. Actual Anwer: 2. Why were they able to expand so quickly? After securing arabia, arab soldiers were able to move on and defeat larger rivals in nearby lands. 3. How did Arab Muslims change the culture of some of the places they conquered? They replaced dominant religions with replacing zoroastrianism after defeating the sasanian persian empire. They brought islam with them and the arabic language 4. Why should one differentiate between the spread of Arab Muslim rule and the spread of Islam? Arab muslim rule would spread by annexing and forcefully taking over states. ISlam spread peacefully inside and outside the empire. 5. Why did Muslims show tolerance to some religions and not all religions? It made conquered people less likely to rebel. It also set apart areas under islamic rule. from the byzantine empire, which more often persecuted jews and non orthodox christians. They also liked it because of them being monotheists What Was Society Like in the Arab Muslim Empire? (pages 105 - 106) 6. What was the social hierarchy of the Arab Muslim Empire? What was the key factor in determining someone's social status? Why would this be important? The social hierarchy was split into 4 main groups At the tops was arab muslims and under that is non arab muslims. Under that was jews and christians and slaves were under that. The key factor was head coverings for women and hats for men and it was important because your status shows how you were treated in society. 7. How were the roles of women different from those of men in early Muslim societies? Men were expected to support their families and to conduct their business in public areas and women usually stayed home but would sometimes go to political positions. The Caliphs (pages 106 - 108) 8. What is a caliph and what is the name of the government he runs? A caliph is a successor of muhammad. They rule states called caliphates. 9. What was the central question about leadership that divided Muslims after the death of Muhammad? The central questions were “but who was the first caliph?” and “who could follow a man who, for muslims, was a messenger from god” 10. How were Shia and Sunni views of succession different? The people who supported muhammad’s main advisor Abu Bakr were known as sunnis also because they held the sunnah in high record. And the people who supported muhammad’s relatives were called the shias 11. Why are the first four caliphs called the “rightly guided caliphs”? Where was their capital? They were called the “rightly guided caliphs” because they had close ties to muhammad and followed the muslim principle. The capital was medina 12. Who succeeded the “rightly guided caliphs”? How did they change to Muslim empire? The umayyad family succeeded the rightly guided caliphs and they also began to expand their empire 13. Who succeeded the Umayyad dynasty? What was their primary achievement? How did their rule affect the overall development of the Muslim empire? The umayyad dynasty was replaced by the abbasid dynasty. They built a new capital as their primary achievement and their empire was lead into a golden age of science music and art 14. What was the role of the Turks in the growth of the Islamic empire in the 1200s? They were soldiers. Eventually They gained control of baghdad but lost it in the 1250’s Two Non-Arab Muslim Empires (pages 109 - 110) 15. How were sultans different from caliphs? Caliphs were ruled by arab dynasties and sultans weren’t ruled by arab dynasties. 16. Describe the Ottoman empire. It arose in asia minor and is now modern day turkey. The ottomans were a turkish dynasty founded in the 1300’s by osman I 17. How was the Safavid empire similar and different from earlier Persian empires? They are different because the safavid empire took power of persia and claimes ali, muhammad’s cousin, as an ancestor. They were shias and made shia islam the official religion of persia. They are the same because the safavid dynasty kept persian paintings and architecture.
