Grade 9 Unit 4 Musical Forms of the Classical Period Music MAPEH Lesson 1 Historical and Cultural Background Music MAPEH The Age of Enlightenment This period focused on a philosophical movement rooted in France in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The movement’s core beliefs centered around three words: reason, nature, and progress. 3 The Public In the field of music, this gave rise to the public concert. There were only private performances sponsored by wealthy families and religious establishments before. Later on, public concerts and performances became available during this time, especially to the rising middle class. 4 A Change in Style Emphasis was put on music perceived as natural, which was homophonic and had vocally conceived melodies with sparse, light instrumental accompaniment. Thus, the Alberti bass, a manner of accompaniment that produced light, broken chords, became popular. 5 Emotional States In music, this led to a wider variety of tonal material depicting different emotions within movements, as opposed to the Baroque norm of depicting only one emotional state per movement. 6 New Instruments Two important musical instruments were invented during this period: the pianoforte and the clarinet. 7 Lesson 2 The Sonata and the Sonata-Allegro Form Music MAPEH Enlighten The word sonata is the past participle of the verb suonare, which means “to make a sound.” In its earliest usage, the word was somewhat of an umbrella term for instrumental music, as opposed to the cantata, which is “sung” music. 9 Sonata-Allegro Form There are three parts in the sonata-allegro form: the exposition, the development, and the recapitulation. 10 Exposition The exposition is the first part of the sonata-allegro form. It presents us with the main themes of the piece. Themes are most often short and easily recognizable melodies. 11 Development The development part elaborates on the themes presented in the exposition, repeats them, alters them, and presents them in various keys; and forms in part or as a whole. 12 Recapitulation It is, in essence, a conclusion to the elaboration, a musical homecoming. The themes that have been elaborated are once again presented, this time only in the tonic key. 13
